Does anybody here invest using the likes of Amertrade, E trade, tradeking etc.

Is it as easy as they claim. $7.00 bucks a trade.

So if i want to buy 100 shares or XYZ at $1.00 per share it would only cost me. $107.00?????? or sell the shares for $1.00 per share it would only cost me $7.00?

Dont want to get over my hillbilly head here.

I used to use ShareBuilder a little. Not a heavy investor. Never got my money when i sold my stock the last time. Wasn't alot of money but still kinda sucks. It cost me 20 dollars a transaction though.

That's the way it works at Scottrade.

Yep, it is very easy and not very expensive. I use TD Ameritrade and have never had any problems in the 7 years I've used them. The trade executions are almost instantaneous too.

I think $2,000 is the starting amount. I was able to get in with $1,000 on a special promotion where they lowered the limit to $500. Thankfully, I have more cash now.

You don't have anything to lose by asking if they will let you in for less than $2000. After all, these brokerages make most of their money off commissions and the more accounts the more trades they make.

i've always been happy with scottrade. this looks like an interesting deal though. it's been tried before, but their biz model says it will work.

Beware of E*Trade if you ever want to get involved in an IPO. They will jack you if they can by arbitrarily deciding that you are the "wrong kind of investor" for an IPO.

(They cost me about $10k on an IPO at one point; I was in a class of investors that the company had decided to reserve shares for, but E*Trade decided on their own recognizance that they didn't want to sell me the shares reserved for me.)

My company does a pretty good job with our online brokerage biz in Thailand, in my opinion. We have about 20% market share, which is, of course, still very, very tiny compared to the US.

The part that I like is that our automated email distribution system (client requests, not spam) is sending out about 100,000 emails of my research to retail clients each business day.

So, my question is whether research is important in selecting your online broker.
