OKLAHOMA 3, ARIZONA 2

The No. 4-ranked University of Oklahoma® Hockey club traveled to Tucson to face the No. 11-ranked Arizona IceCats and won a thriller by a score of 3-2 with a power play goal late in the third period by defenseman Robert Hetrick. The Sooners started out slow and Arizona took the game to them for much of the first period. However, OU turned the tide of momentum late in the period and the hard work paid off for the Sooners when Justin Hall scored with 1:46 to go to give OU a 1-0 lead. Arizona scored just over two minutes into the second period to tie the game but Hall scored again, this time on the power play at 15:54 of the second period, to give the Sooners the lead again at 2-1. In the third period, Arizona tied the game yet again with a goal at the 11:03 mark. While the two teams battled back and forth with the score still tied at 2, Arizona caught a break and received a gift from the referee at 14:24 of the third period when he whistled two Sooners for penalties, giving Arizona a 5-on-3 advantage for a full two minutes. Despite having the two-man advantage, Arizona could not solve the Sooners’ penalty kill and OU held the IceCats to minimal shots during the entire two minutes. Much to the chagrin of the Arizona coaching staff, the referee blew his whistle again with 2:39 left to play, calling a penalty on the IceCats. The Sooners wasted no time on the power play and Hetrick ripped his game-winning shot into the IceCats’ net with just 2:10 to go in the game to give OU a 3-2 lead. The Sooners’ defense clamped down for the last two minutes of the contest and did not allow any shots on the OU goal for the remainder of the game to preserve the 3-2 Oklahoma win.

Oklahoma goaltender Aaron Schmeilski showed why he was one of the ACHA’s best goaltenders, stopping 36 of 38 Arizona shots tonight. Arizona’s Nick Boddy stopped 29 of OU’s 32 shots. OU’s power play clicked again, going a respectable 2 for 8 on the evening while Arizona went 0 for 6 with the man advantage.

The Sooners improve to 14-0-0 on the season. Arizona’s record drops to 7-2-0-1. The Sooners remain in Tucson for another game Saturday night against Arizona.
