Today, November 9th, is one of those important dates in German history.

On this day in 1918, Kaiser Wilhelm II was forced to abdicate the German and Prussian thrones. Later that day, the German Republic was proclaimed from a balcony of the Reichstag.

On this day in 1923, Hitler's Beer Hall Putsch was put down and failed in its goal of seizing power in Bavaria and Germany.

In 1938 on 11/9, Kristallnacht began. Jewish businesses and homes were ransacked and destroyed, at least hundreds died, and thousands were shipped off to concentration camps.

On a brighter note in 1989, the East German government threw open the checkpoints along the Berlin Wall, leading to Germany's re-unification.
