Why don't you checkout the library. You could educate yourself and find a girl whose smart like your Mother.

You know...I met your Mom at the library in college....

because the boy has rights and he is entitled to representation to help ensure those rights are not violated.

He does not, however, enjoy the right to violate himself at the public library...it tends to make the keyboard all sticky and stuff.

This is where I think Attorneys have really screwed the pooch. I know exactly what you are saying, but defending ones rights and trying to get one off when they know the person is guilty(of any crime) are two different things and the latter is wrong in my opinion and not what was intended when the constitution was written.
There is a huge difference between, "yes your honor, my client is guilty and has admitted so. We feel like x would be a good punishment based on previous sickos similar sentences." Instead of, "Your honor, my client has realized how bad he was and is very sorry, can't we all just go home now";)

What is really bad is when an attorney know's his/her client is guilty and still fights tooth and nail to prove the client didn't do it. Again, not at all what was intended when the constitution was written(IMHO)

you are joking right... i mean, really, you are kidding? If YOU don't know the truth how are you supposed to defend it? I'm not an attorney, but this seems as a logical starting point to me. Of course they could lie to you but that wouldn't seem to be counter productive.

Hey, who said anything about logic. As an officer of the court, we cannot present any evidence which is a lie. Candor to the tribuanal and all of that stuff. So, if we know for a fact that a client "did it" it sure cuts down on viable defenses. Back in the day when I did a bit of criminal defense, I would say, tell me what I need to know, and that was it. Now if a client wants to plead out, fine, spill. But if your client wants to go to trial, you don't want to know if they did it or not. They all say they didn't do it anyway.

If YOU don't know the truth how are you supposed to defend it?

In our system, you don't have to know the truth to defend a charge.

All you have to know is the prosecuting attorney's theory, and be able to produce evidence that introduces reasonable doubt.

Sometimes, this comes in the form of an alternate theory. Sometimes, this comes in the form of countering the DA's evidence and/or witnesses by disproving or calling into question their validity. Sometimes it just comes in the form of suppressing evidence by rule. And I'm sure there are lots of other ways.

But knowing the truth? Totally unnecessary. And as mentioned, sometimes even counter-productive.

Those are usually the best.

Ladies and gentlemen of the jury, by now you're aware of the DNA evidence against my client that supposedly indicates odds of 8 bajillion to 1 that anyone else could've done it besides my client. However, may I direct your attention to aggy. Because realistically, no one but aggy could've done it. Come on!

...But knowing the truth? Totally unnecessary. And as mentioned, sometimes even counter-productive.

Counter-productive because most people are decent citizens and want guilty people to be held accountable for there actions. To mislead with false or contrary information to what they know to be the truth must be trying on the ethical pysche of a person. Not really a rewarding career as far as I am concerned. I still remember O.J. Simpson's lawyer and friend Robert Kardasian's face when O.J. was found NOT GUILTY. He had a look of disgust that said, Damn, I can't believe he just got away with murder.

When I finally snap and kill somebody on the football board, I'm going to want an attorney that doesn't care if I'm guilty or not.
