I don't have the time nor inclincation to crunch the numbers but so far (halfway through the Texas race) it seems that if Tony Stewart had made the chase/playoffs he'd be winning right about now. :texan:

wow... they are racing? it is raining here, and I am about 10 miles away.

And...Tony hangs on to win another race today.

Then he should have finished in the Top 10 during the first 26 races of the year.

The system is what it is.

A system that doesn't reward the year's winningest driver is pretty crappy though.

I can't stand Nascar, but i still don't understand why the winners aren't rewarded with more points than they get; isn't there only a 10 pt difference between first and second? To me that makes absolutely no sense

I'll agree that the points system could use some tweaking.

But just as we all told the college football world in 2003 after all the BCS controversy that year, this is the system that everyone agreed to.

Personally, I'd like to see winners of races get rewarded a lot more. What would have been really crappy is if Kasey Kahne, who was leading the series in wins with a few races to go but was on the outside looking in, would have missed the Chase this year.

The chase-field has to be big enough to make it very unlikely that the best driver not included will do what Tony is doing right now, making them look silly. 10 drivers out of 50 or so (40 regulars and the guys who make it to a few races each year) is only 1/4 or 1/5 of all of the drivers included in the "playoffs" which makes it likely that what is happening right now will keep happening.

If you must do something with the top 10 because you love the number 10 or something, bring those drivers to a short track like Bristol and let 'em have at it for 100 laps some weekend. Just them. That would be entertaining as all hell.

Then, include 15, 20, whatever number works to make sure that the best drivers that year are all in the chase, and do that too.

what was the point of the chase? to get more people to watch the later races?

Ward Burton is racing again. All is right in the world again.

or under the 'classic' point system, Stewart would be 4th. 387 points out of first.

gotta make the 'play-offs' (as in any sport) before one can win the championship

just sayin

In 2003, Matt Kenseth took over the points lead after the 4th race of the year and never relinquished it.

So, the Chase was born the following season.

Here's to hoping Kenseth pulls it off this season.

btw, has anybody crunched those numbers yet?

Yeah, I saw a "if he were in" story with the numbers to say that Tony would definitely be winning. I'll look for a link.

Stewart has won more races during the Chase (Kansas and Atlanta) than any Nextel Cup contender has. His 995 points in seven starts is 37 points better than the next best: Chase leader Matt Kenseth.
