Striking janitors stage protest in middle of busy intersectionGalleria area traffic brought to a halt

(11/02/06 - KTRK/HOUSTON) - A protest by striking janitors is bringing traffic in the Galleria area to a halt this afternoon.

The janitors are sitting in the middle of the intersection of Westheimer and Post Oak, near the Galleria. They have placed trash bags and trash cans in the street. At least a dozen people are sitting in a circle around the trash bags. 'Justice for janitors' is written in chalk on the street.

The protesters have been on the scene since about 1:30. Police officers are trying to direct traffic around the sit-in. Backups in the area remain excessive.

Officers are on the scene. It appears they're trying to arrest protesters. At least some of the protesters appear to have been handcuffed or chained to the trash cans, and possibly each other.

Houston janitors have been striking against the city's major commercial cleaning companies. The Service Employees International Union is seeking a raise to $8.50 an hour, health insurance and more guaranteed work hours for Houston janitors.

Houston janitors went on strike Oct. 23 after contract talks with ABM Janitorial Services, GCA Services, OneSource, Sanitors Services of Texas, and Pritchard Industries Southwest broke down. About 1,700 workers have walked off the job, targeting an estimated 58 buildings in the city's downtown and shopping district, union spokeswoman Lynda Tran said.

I was there in August (sis's neighborhood) and I'm pretty sure there should be a traffic warning every day.

I work at Richmond and Post Oak, so it will probably effect me somewhat. I actually work right next door to where the OU Club of Houston is having their pep rally tomorrow night.

I figure if you sit in the middle of the street, you won't be smart enough to spell "Justice"
