A man accused in at least two sexual attacks on women and suspected in five others admitted to one of the assaults and said that he is in the country illegally, law enforcement officials said Wednesday.
Jose Fernando Rivera-Sanchez, 28, whom police originally identified by the alias Leopoldo Sanchez, is charged with two counts of aggravated sexual assault, police said.
He is suspected in three other sexual attacks on women and two attempted sexual assaults, authorities added.
He is in the Harris County jail without the possibility of bail.
He is expected to appear in court today.
Police said Rivera-Sanchez acknowledged he sexually assaulted an 18-year-old woman Aug. 15 in the 3800 block of Broadway. He told police he smoked marijuana often and could not remember details of the assault or other attacks, said Houston Police Department investigator Pedro Moreno.
At least three women identified him as their attacker by late Wednesday, police said.
Rivera-Sanchez told police officers who arrested him late Sunday that he was in the country illegally, said prosecutor Sylvia Escobedo Newman. She said he had been convicted in December of unrelated misdemeanors, jailed several days and then deported to Mexico.
Rivera-Sanchez was deported Jan. 11, said Carl Rusnok, spokesman for the U.S. Bureau of Immigration and Customs Enforcement. He could not legally return to the U.S. for at least 10 years, Rusnok said.
Police said the attacks occurred in east and southeast Houston between April and late October this year.
Houston police got a break in the case Sunday night. Victims had given police their attackers' description and the vehicles he drove. A patrol officer, Marco Nava, spotted the car in a field in the 8300 block of La Porte.
Rivera-Sanchez admitted he liked picking up prostitutes and smoking marijuana, police said.
Just another tally of illegals doing sex crimes...;)
