What the hell is this nerd talking about?

expect loudest game ever at kyle field (http://www.texags.com/main/forum.reply.asp?topic_id=734938&forum_id=5)
Weather should have an impact. If there is a temperature inversion the sound waves will bounce off the inversion and make the stadium even louder ( very similar to the fact you can hear trains at night better than during the day, especially when there is a temperature inversion). The weather forecast is cool Sat night. Night games should be louder than day games. But just my scientific guess. ;)

You know, inversion.

That inversion will also keep the sheep smell closer to the ground.

inversion is what howzit experiences while swimming in cold water.

Proven fact.

Night games are louder because everyone's been drinking all day.:)

Was the question actually serious? I think what they mean is when a layer of warm air gets trapped under a layer of cold air, so there's actually a failry abrupt change in air density, and that layer boundary will reflect some sound waves back downward.

would that actually make a stadium louder? I doubt it. But it would be a nice set-up for a tornado.

BZZZT

An inversion is when the air temperature increases with height; the normal state of affairs is for the temperature to decrease with height. Inversions are common on clear night when the ground cools dramatically and cools the adjacent layer of air.

But it would be a nice set-up for a tornado.

Nope. Since inversions are the opposite of what you described, they are absolutely stable and not at all what you need for convection and tornadoes.

My mistake. That's why I'm not a meteorologist. ;)

Yes, but I was still fairly impressed with your answer...you know, for a non-weather geek.

Actually, in some cases an inversion is good for tornadoes...you know, the whole breaking of the cap thing.

And so ends my obligatory post in the weather thread.

Inversions are cool...

Lot of research about detonating a conventional/thermo-nuclear device under an inversion to increase said yield. Don't knwo what they found, just that it was active research at one time.

Yeah, aggie wants to yell loud, hope his nuts fall off...

Hey, md that's sound like the weather I'm looking for. I'll be flying into College Station from Wichita and will leave right after the game. Looks like there'll be some good stable clouds to fly through with a slight chance of rain. Got a better outlook for the area between 3pm CST and Midnite?

I know we're supposed to have a chance of rain and thunderstorms here on Saturday night.
