The No. 7-ranked University of Oklahoma® Hockey club persevered and earned a hard-fought, come-from-behind victory tonight over No. 9 Arizona State by a score of 3-2. The Sun Devils had a little extra jump in their step in the first period and brought the action to the Sooners all game long. The Arizona State hustle and effort paid off with a power play goal at the 16:18 mark to put ASU up 1-0 over OU. The new USA Hockey enforcement standards were in full effect tonight as both teams saw plenty of time on the power play and penalty kill throughout the game. Despite the lack of even-strength play for most of the game, the score remained 1-0 in ASU’s favor after 40 minutes of play. In the third period, forward Kyle Allan got the Sooners on the scoreboard with a power play goal just 1:46 into the period to tie the game at 1-1. However, ASU responded with a goal 23 seconds later to give them a 2-1 lead. Forward Adrian Borchgrevink tied the game at 2 apiece when he jammed the puck into the ASU net at 10:05 of the third. Just when it was looking as if overtime was a strong possibility, forward Doug Gebbie received a crossing pass at the top of the crease and went top shelf past ASU’s goalie to give OU its only lead of the game at 3-2. ASU pulled their goaltender with 40 seconds left in the game as they tried to tie the score and send the contest to overtime. However, the Sooners defense was able to smother the ASU offense, as well as the puck, and time ran out to preserve a character-building 3-2 OU win over the Sun Devils.
Oklahoma goaltender Ryan Anderson stopped 25 of 27 ASU shots while Sun Devils goaltender Kyle Bronsteen stopped 21 of the 24 OU shots he saw during the evening. OU’s power play was 2 for 11 while ASU was 1 for 12 on the power play.
The Sooners improve to 11-0-0 on the season while Arizona State drops to 2-4-0. The Sooners host Minnesota next Friday night at 7:30 P.M. at the Blazers Ice Centre.
