And the homeowner's association claims that it is one of these:

According to them, this thing is cleaning up all of the road kill in the neighborhood. I may test this theory and go out and shoot a rabbit tonight. A head shot with the pellet gun at about 15 feet should dispatch a rabbit. Then, I can see how long he lasts until the turkey vulture comes in and eats him.

Just one, i thought these things hung out in flocks

I wonder if that thing could haul off a small dog. Neighbor with small dog - problem solved.

nope, they usually "forage" alone

oh, and they're protected under the migratory bird treaty act of 1918, so no killing it.

Only if you get caught.

probably tastes like chicken anyways

Hey, aren't the only two birds you can kill in Oklahoma without a license and in a certain season the English Starling and the common Sparrow?

That is assuming that if the State doesn't have a season for a particular bird you can't kill it ever unless it's a starling or sparrow.

Did that make sense?

Is the California Condor still the largest bird in the world?

Maybe it was the largest wingspan?

Definitely by wingspan. If you're talking mass, it's the ostrich.

In this case it wouldn't matter, since ostriches are non-migratory.

Turkey vulture = "buzzard", right?

I also thought they traveled in large flocks.

proud gonzo

there is more than one kind of "buzzard". pretty much any vulture is called a buzzard.

the black vulture forages in groups:

the turkey vulture forages alone:

And I thought it was the Andean Condor that was the biggest bird. Which, coincidentally, is also a vulture.

California Condor has the largest wingspan for North American birds (and it's the largest flying land bird in North America). The Andean Condor is not as long/tall as the California Condor, but is heavier and has a larger wingspan.
