NORMAN — In this time of college athletes forgoing senior
seasons of eligibility in favor of a professional sports career, early
departures are somewhat common.

The same cannot be said of early departures for graduate school. But
that is precisely the path chosen by Oklahoma defensive tackle Carl
Pendleton.

Pendleton, who is the legal guardian for his 10-year-old brother,
Kierstan, plans to complete his football career at the end of this, his
junior season on the Sooner team. He will enter graduate school and
concentrate on both his academic and family responsibilities.

The transition to graduate school became easier today when it was
announced that Pendleton will receive one of nine $18,000
Scholar-Athlete Post-Graduate Scholarships from the National Football
Foundation and College Hall of Fame awarded to players on the Division
I-A level.

"I wasn't really sure about the decision of not playing next year,"
Pendleton said. "I really needed some confirmation, and if $18,000
doesn't confirm it then not much does. The ability to take care of
school and spend more time with Kierstan is really a big thing.

"I think he was more excited than I was. He was dancing around saying,
'Isn't that like 18-grand?' So, yes, it's big."

Pendleton, a 3.86 student in sociology with a minor in religious
studies, will be honored with other recipients at the 49th Annual Awards
Dinner, a black-tie affair at New York City's Waldorf Astoria, on Dec.
5.

Then it will be back to Norman to complete his undergraduate degree and
begin thoughts of graduate school at OU and of being more available for
Kierstan, a fifth-grade student at Lincoln Elementary in Norman. The
two have resided together for about one year.

"With the new responsibility of raising my younger brother I realize
that football is not the best choice for me," Pendleton said. "Football
was a way for me to get my education. Graduate School will allow me to
further my education and allow me more time to spend raising my brother
without having to play football. He has become my center."

OU President David L. Boren voiced the university's appreciation of
Pendleton.

"The University of Oklahoma is extremely proud that Carl Pendleton has
been selected for this prestigious national award," Boren said. "I can
think of no student-athlete who serves as a better role model for young
people than Carl, who along with his responsibilities as a student and
an athlete, has taken on the responsibility for helping to raise his
younger brother."

OU Athletics Director Joe Castiglione, a member of the NFF's Board of
Directors and a member of the organization's executive committee, said
the scholarship and Pendleton are a perfect match.

WOW! That is about as cool as you can get. I will miss him in the Crimson and Cream, but if he is going to go, what better reason is there?

Congrats Carl!! That is awesome!

I wish it were stories like this that made the front page of ESPN instead of stories about athletes always getting into trouble.

Good luck with graduate school and taking care of Kierstan.

The truth at OU is (and this is probably the same for every D-1 school), there really is no excuse for ANY student-athlete to get under a 3.5 here. With all of the resources they have access to i.e. tutors, extra sets of notes from note-takers, all student-athletes should make grades like Carl Pendelton.

That said, congratulations to Carl. He must be thrilled he's getting a lot of his grad school paid for. He sounds like a quality guy with goals for himself and his family.

That is great to hear that a football player is thinking about academics and not just the NFL.

i agree with everything you say. some of it i think defames the real work that many students do on their own......but some athletes don't get the credit many of them deserve for seeing college and the classroom as an opportunity. many others treat it like a joke.

My son is in FCA with Carl and said he is one of the greatest guys he knows. He also told me that Carl almost quit playing football after last year but stuck it out for another season so he could go to school on scholarship. How refreshing to see a guy play football so he can go to school and not go to school so he can play football. He is truly a student athlete

All the best to Carl and his brother.

Where is he going to Grad school at?
I'm sure he is aware that he can still play while enrolled in grad school?
I know several guys that did that.

It sounds like he's staying here fo grad school. And it sounds like he wants more time to focus on his studies and spend raising his little brother. Can't fault the guy for that.

Good guy...Good Luck. I wish he could stick it out one more year. Him leaving will take away some of our depth in the middle. With that being said, under his circumstances you have to admire his decision.

WTG Carl, I thoroughly support the decision to choose family first... Just make sure Kierstan drops in about eight years from now ;)... Door's always open to future Pendeltons!!! :D

It is refreshing (and rare) to see someone with their priorities straight at that age.

Carl is a good kid. From the beginning, he saw playing D1 football as a chance to get an education. He is an intelligent, articulate, and tender-hearted guy. He loves kids, and is a committed Christian.

Finally, us Chieftains have a cool success story about one of our own. I'm proud of him.

Color me impressed! I am proud that he is a Sooner. That's the kind of story you don't hear these days. Good on ya Carl!!! We'll miss you on the field.
