Scored my tickets for the November 4th show here in Ft. Worth at Will Rogers Auditorium. Pretty small venue and it should be a great place to check Les play.

don't put Dinosaur Jr. in the same vein as Primus. Primus is a band with very technically proficient musicians and not much else. Dinosaur Jr. were the fathers of grunge.

btw, Dinosaur Jr. is touring now with the original members (from Bug, You're Living All Over Me, etc...) Loudest Concert Ever.

I thought Mother Love Bone were the fathers of grunge?

not unless they were putting out albums in like '83.

Dinosaur Jr. were largely responsible for returning lead guitar to indie rock and, along with their peers the Pixies (http://allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=11:qyg9keft7q7v), they injected late-'80s alternative rock with monumental levels of pure guitar noise. As the group's career progressed, it turned into a vehicle for J Mascis (http://allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=11:rt8uak4kgm3p)' songwriting and playing, which had the ultimate result of turning Dinosaur's albums into largely similar affairs. Over time, Mascis (http://allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=11:n9b8b5z4bsqf) shed his hardcore punk roots and revealed himself to be a disciple of Neil Young (http://allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=11:aq6wtr69kl7x), crafting simple songs that were delivered at a crushing volume and spiked with shards of feedback. Consequently, Dinosaur Jr.'s '90s albums -- when the group was essentially a front for Mascis (http://allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=11:269sa9lgy23k) -- don't sound particularly revolutionary, even with their subtle sonic innovations, yet their original '80s records for SST were a different matter. On their early records, Dinosaur lurched forward, taking weird detours into free-form noise and melodic soloing before the songs are brought back into relief by Mascis (http://allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=11:269sa9lgy23k)' laconic whine. Dinosaur's SST records laid the foundation for alternative rock's commercial breakthrough in the early '90s, and while the band's profile was raised substantially in the wake of Nirvana (http://allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=11:1sj20r2ac48z)'s success, they never really became much bigger than highly respected cult figures.

one of GHP's former roommates left a Primus cd in the apartment when he moved out. I ended up with it...and when i finally saw the guy four or five years later I gave it back to him.

the comment about SST records is a little misleading since SST was printing vinyl as far back as 82 or 83---for Black Flag, the minutemen, Meat Puppets, Husker Du and others....and even later Soundgarden, Screaming Trees, Green River, Mudhoney etc.

on teh Neil YOung influence there's an interesing compilation from the late 80's /early 90's called the Bridge that has Dinosaur and the Flaming Lips among others covering NY--it's worth checking out.

i'd still vote the stooges as at least the grandfathers of so-called (an industry term) "grunge".

edit: Sonic Youth also printed some on SST....and Mick Ronson's guitar work on Ziggy, Hunky Dory, Man who Sold the World, and probably Diamond Dogs were also influential for "grunge"....in addition to Mick inventing virtually every "rock star guitarist" posturing pose and cape-wearing power chord on-stage coolness. don't believe me, check out the Ziggy movie.....

Andy's right, i'm just bored. and you have to be careful with some of the album reviews and info at allmusic.com. some of their stuff is just not correct. it's an amazing and useful database (though, since it's gone "commercial" they give every record 4 stars--like the Paris Hilton LP) but some of their reviewers are simply wrong sometimes.....about dates or facts.

I would consider the MC5 and the Stooges the grandfathers of grunge.
