Suicidal man holds up I-35 traffic

NORMAN — North- and south-bound traffic on Interstate 35 was diverted around the Main Street overpass today while police talked a man out of jumping, officials said.
Officers spent about 20 minutes talking to the 34-year-old man before getting close enough to grab and pull him to safety, Capt. Leonard Judy said.

Several passersby called 911 about 3 p.m. to report the man standing on the outside rail of the Main Street overpass, Judy said. Officers pulled him to safety about 20 minutes later.

The man had been drinking and as the alcohol took effect “he became increasingly distracted which allowed officers to move in close enough to get hold of him,” Judy said.

Eastbound traffic on Main was halted. Traffic backed up for several blocks and a crowd gathered at the west end of the overpass while officers talked to the man. North- and southbound traffic on I-35 between Lindsey Street and Main was diverted onto service roads, Judy said.

The man was taken to Norman Regional Hospital’s emergency room for evaluation and a referral for mental health services, Judy said.
