No, I am not talking about a washed up country singer's tax problems.

So what do you think was on his hand last night? Dirt. Chocolate cake. Pine tar.

I say it was a dirty sanchez gone wrong.

Thoughts?

prolly was....but I think the article overstates the effect that pine tar has. A mass asymmetry to the ball has less of an effect on the movement of the ball than the change in the aerodynamic properties of the ball. I think seam orientation has a far greater effect in that respect than pine tar does. I don't know how much pine tar (or shaving cream, or suntan oil) would change the aerodynamic properties, but I wouldn't think it would be nearly as much change as a scuff would create.

The one big effect pine tar, shaving cream or suntan lotion would have would be making a pitchers grip on the baseball more effective. thats it. Sometimes the conditions on the field, like cold and moisture, can erode a pitchers ability to grip the baseball on some pitches. pine tar and other substances, would help to correct that.

I don't really buy that this is a case of doctoring the baseball so much as this is a case of doctoring his hand. Is that cheating? I don't really think so, but thats just my opinion.

Pine tar for grip in the cold. No question.

It's been done for a long time. No big deal. Why do you think LaRussa didn't make a huge ordeal about it? Because it's a widely-used practice.

Pine tar is relevant to the Oval.

Doleo posts with it on his keyboard.

What? You think BP using statistics they made up to give them answers they want is meaningless. That's just crazy talk! :twinkies:

If you are going to cheat, there are better places to hide the stuff than on your throwing hand; of course, that could be why it's there because no one could be that stupid to put it in the open, could they?
