SOONERS WEEKLY
For the Week of October 23, 2006

SOONERS MAKE STATEMENT AT SHOWCASE
No. 7 OKLAHOMA HOSTS No. 9 ARIZONA STATE THIS WEEKEND

THIS WEEK’S GAMES - The University of Oklahoma® hockey club (9-0-0) returns home to Oklahoma City to host No. 9 Arizona State (2-2-0) for a pair of games. The Friday game will begin at 7:30 P.M. while the Saturday contest will have an 8:30 P.M. start. All Sooners home games are played at Blazers Ice Centre, 8000 South I-35, in Oklahoma City. The Sooners have never beaten the Sun Devils, going 0-4-0 all time against ASU. Later in the season, Oklahoma will travel to Tempe to participate in the ASU Desert Classic against the Sun Devils, Minot State and DePaul.

LAST WEEK’S OU HOCKEY GAMES – Oklahoma participated in the ACHA D1 Showcase in Youngstown, Ohio along with 15 other teams. Each team played three games against opponents who weren’t on the regular season schedule. On Friday, the Sooners played No. 3 Penn State and beat the Icers 5-3 behind incredible goaltending by Aaron Schmeilski and two goals from Doug Gebbie. Saturday saw No. 8 Lindenwood on the other side of the ice from the Sooners. The two teams are very evenly matched but in this game OU came out on top 2-0 behind goals from Adrian Borchgrevink and Jordan Novak. The last game of the Showcase for the Sooners was an early Sunday contest against Scranton, who proved to be tougher than advertised. The Sooners had to get a power play goal from Novak with just over three minutes to go in the game to secure a 3-2 victory over the Royals.

RANKINGS – The Sooners moved up two spots and are now ranked 7th in the most recent ACHA Coaches Division 1 ranking released last Friday. The next ACHA D1 ranking is scheduled to be released on Friday, November 3rd.

SCOUTING THE SUN DEVILS – Arizona State is coached by Mike De Angelis, who played for 15 years in Europe and in North American minor leagues before coaching the Sun Devils…De Angelis is a three-time member of the Italian Olympic hockey team…ASU is led by junior forward Joe Ahern, senior forward Richard Ferroni, junior forward Greg Langston, senior forward Ray Corey and senior defenseman Mike Reveland…ASU junior defenseman Tony Bonacorso was selected to the U.S. University Select Team which will compete at the Winter World University Games in Turin, Italy in January 2007. ASU started the season by splitting a home series with Weber State and last weekend split a road series with No. 5 Iowa State, losing the first game 7-4 and winning the follow-up by a score of 5-3.

SOONERS HOME GAMES ON THE AIR – All 2006-2007 OU Hockey home games will be broadcast over the internet this season. Caleb Fox, a senior from Rowlett, Texas, returns to call his second season of play-by-play action for the Sooners. Chris-

A buddy of mine just sent me info on a Big XII Hockey Classic Tournament being played in Frisco, TX this weekend. Did OU's schedule not work out to where they could play in this or is this a different league or something than what you play in?

Beef,

The teams playing in the Big XII tourney in Frisco are all ACHA D2 or D3 teams - we play in the ACHA D1 where the caliber of play is (quite) a bit better - not to sound too arrogant, but it's kinda like OU football going to play in a 1-AA tourney - not exactly the same level of competition

Nevertheless, had we been inclined to participate, we also had a schedule conflict that would have prevented us from going as we already had a pair of home games scheduled against No. 9 Arizona State (ACHA D1) when we got the invite in late Spring to participate in the Big XII tourney

Thanks for asking, Beef,

Chris Perry
