OKLAHOMA 3, SCRANTON 2

The No. 7-ranked University of Oklahoma® Hockey club finished off their run at the ACHA D1 Showcase in Youngstown, Ohio with scrappy 3-2 win over Scranton in an early Sunday morning contest. Doug Gebbie put the Sooners on top early with a power play goal just 1:05 into the game. The early score made it appear as if the Sooners would roll but Scranton regrouped and gave as good as they got from OU for the rest of the period which ended 1-0. In the second period, the Sooners were on a 5-on-3 power play when a defensive miscue resulted in a Scranton short-handed goal to tie the game at 1. OU re-took the lead when Ryan Kenney banged home a rebound on the power play at 11:50 to make the score 2-1. The score stayed 2-1 through the end of the second period and the first twelve minutes of the third until Scranton scored a power play goal of their own at 12:29 to tie the game again at 2. Overtime loomed as a definite possibility until Jordan Novak ripped a one-timer on the power play into the Scranton net at 16:17 to give the Sooners a 3-2 lead. The Sooners still had to kill off some late penalties but came through to secure the win by a score of 3-2. With the win, Oklahoma joins Ohio, Western Michigan and Kent State as the only teams to go undefeated at this season’s Showcase.

Sooners goaltender Ryan Anderson was solid in net for OU, stopping 25 of 27 Scranton shots. Royals goaltender David Skinner was under siege most of the game and ended up stopping 42 of the 45 OU shots he endured. All of the goals in the game were scored on the special teams, with OU’s power play going 3 for 11 and giving up a short-handed goal while Scranton was 1 for 8 on the power play.

The Sooners improve to 9-0-0 on the season while Scranton falls to 2-6-0. After two weeks on the road, Oklahoma returns to Oklahoma City to play Arizona State at 7:30 P.M. this Friday night at the Blazers Ice Centre.
