View Full Version : Firefox 2.0

is due out on Tuesday. (http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/business/289490_firefox21.html) I really hope it fixes some of the memory leaks from 1.5. Otherwise, the biggest feature I think that they've added is spell checking built into the browser. Of course, there is probably an extension that does this, so it's not that big of a deal. Anyway, I sort of have mixed feeling about this release. I'll definitely upgrade, but I doubt I'll be wowed.

I'm not going to bother with IE7. I can't imagine a world with no extensions.

Interesting thing: The application bar at the top of my browser window says Firefox 2.0. When I go to help, about Firefox, it says version 1.5.0.7. Strange.

And yeah, most people don't notice the leaks because they open and close their browser. I keep mine open for days though - usually one window for work stuff like previewing html and another window for browsing. Usually after a few days I notice it's using like 500 megs of memory and I have to restart the browser.

Looking around (http://wiki.mozilla.org/Thunderbird2), I think Thunderbird2 is going to be a bit more exciting. It appears they won't release it until December (http://www.mozilla.org/projects/thunderbird/roadmap.html) though.

Having multiple labels per email is going to be a big help.

NO CALENDAR!11!!!!11!
There is some other project that is supposed to combine sunbird and thinderbird called lightning. They have an extension that plugs into Thunderbird that works OK. I don't go to enough meetings to justify needing a calendar up all day. In fact, I hope they always stay seperate.

Nope. It won't screw up anything.

If you want to be on the safe side, download and install the Google Firefox Broswer sync extension before you update to 2.0. It copies your bookmarks (and other settings, if you wish) to a server and allows you to sycn your browser across all computers that you use.

Yermom - most of incompatible extensions can be fixed by editing the install.rdf file.

The file has a min and max version number for compatability. Just edit the max and make 2.* or 3.*.

Or I can e-mail you the tabmix xpi and the fasterfox xpi that's already had that done to it. I imagine they'll all be available in less than a week.
