OKLAHOMA 5, PENN STATE 3

The No. 7-ranked University of Oklahoma® Hockey club started off their visit to the ACHA D1 Showcase in Youngstown, Ohio with an impressive 5-3 win over No. 3 Penn State on Friday afternoon. The Sooners got on the board early with a goal from forward Doug Gebbie 42 seconds into the contest to stun the Icers and give OU an early 1-0 lead. The Sooners would increase their lead at the 16:00 mark of the first with a power play goal from Kevin Kennedy to put OU up 2-0. After twenty minutes of play, the Sooners went to the locker room with a 2-0 lead and tons of momentum. However, the Icers regained the momentum and showed why they’re an annual contender for the National Championship as they potted two power play goals in the first minutes of the second period to tie the game at 2. However, the Sooners would not be deterred. Gebbie scored his second goal of the night when he shot the puck at a wild angle from behind the goal line off of the Penn State goaltender’s back and into the net at 10:03 to give OU a 3-2 lead that they would take to the locker room. The Icers tied the game at 3-3 with a goal at the 10:55 mark of the third period but OU responded less than a minute later with a beautiful tic-tac-toe goal by Justin Hall from Jordan Novak and Phil Ritter to put OU up 4-3. Luke Rose gave the Sooners a two-goal cushion with a power play goal at the 13:42 mark but Penn State was not ready to go down without a fight. The Icers pulled their goalie with 2 minutes to go and were the beneficiary of some OU penalties, so they had a 2-man advantage for the last few minutes of the game and peppered the OU net with shot after shot. However, they could not solve the Sooners gritty defense before the final buzzer ended with the scoreboard confirming the Sooners 5-3 win.

Sooners goaltender Aaron Schmeilski, playing in front of his parents and numerous OU Hockey faithful who made the trip to Ohio, was the star of the game for the Sooners. Schmeilski stopped 39 of 42 Penn State shots, many of them while OU was a man down on the penalty kill. Penn State’s goalie, Chris Matteo, stopped 21 of the 26 Sooners shots he faced. OU’s power play was 2 for 11 on the day while Penn State was 2 for 14 on the power play.

The Sooners improve to 7-0-0 on the season while the loss drops Penn State to 3-2-0. Oklahoma remains at the 2006 ACHA D1 Showcase in Youngstown, Ohio for a game against No. 8 Lindenwood at 12:00 P.M EST tomorrow.
