High debt bars U.S. troops from overseas duty (http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/headline/nation/4274618.html)

So, I guess, the theory is that if a soldier can't pay his Visa bill, he'll sell secrets to Osama?

Is there any proof that stuff like that happens?

IIRC, it's damn near impossible to enlist in the Air Force if you have terrible credit.

it's not much easier with the other 3 branches either 1tc.

makes sense. I only know of two incidents. One was another soldier I was in AIT with and they said they tried to enlist in the AF and couldn't. I didn't ask what MOS but I'm sure that weighs in somewhere and another guy in my Guard unit couldn't be in a launcher (13M) because he couldn't get a TS clearance or maybe just Secret clearance because of his credit so he worked in supply(92Y).

When I was in the Army you couldn't be issued a weapon if you had been convicted of any type of spousal assault/battery.

I never understood why you would keep someone in the Army that couldn't use a weapon.

the issues they are having are with the payday loans after they are enlisted, and i guess after they come back for a while

Seriously. The military really thinks that an American soldier, deep in debt, will sell his jeep or a missle or secrets to the enemy? It sounds like a SNL skit.

Do we have any leaders with a brain in this country?

General MacArthur: "Let's go shoot some Japs. Wait a minute, Johnny. You're two weeks late on your student loan payment. We'll re-take the Philippines later."

its largely because we're deploying troops to the middle east where often large cache's of cash and other valuables are often found by common foot soldiers....there have been many instances of wealthy arabs offering large sums to soldiers for "this and that"

From what I understand, it's been an element of security clearance for a very, very long time. And it's understandable. If you have a ton of debt, easy money is just that much more tempting.

Ah. The Three Kings theory.

Sounds plausible.

Very interesting. Is it true that the military takes soldiers' debt very seriously?

My parents owend a rent house over by tinker and they were always excited when a AF guy looked at the houe because they told me that they couldn't get behind or they'd get in trouble.

Yes. Debt is a long time consideration in security clearances. And it makes sense, do you want people handling sensitive information and/or equipment who have some kind of vulnerability? Such as a need to get out of an unbearable debt?

And Yes, the military takes debt seriously. I don't know if you've noticed, but they are waging a battle against the payday loans.

the deal 1TC referred to with the "cant carry a gun" is the lautenberg amendment which precludes anybody convicted of domestic abuse from legally owning a weapon....the deal with the military has been a question for sometime on how it affects ones ability to soldier

and yes, the military is big on financial responsibility.....the pay day loan places love the military because all they have to do is call the commander and it usually means things are fixed.....however, you cant squeeze blood from a turnip.....

I used to call first shirts way back in the day until I actually read some stuff on collection law and realized I could get the company in a whole lot of trouble for that...

Military personnel are weird, because there's absolutely no middle ground in their credit. Either their credit score is 750 or above or 550 or below. Generally anyone E-5 and above was golden.

**note: most military personnel had great credit. It's just the ones that fell off the log fell in a big way.**
