I want some recommendations for disc defragmenting programs. I'm currently using a trial version of Diskeeper 2007 Home which seems to work pretty decently. I wanna know what other defrag programs people use.

Get a Mac. :D

And then wait for mdklatt to weigh in.

Seriously, I usually just use the native defrag from XP.

Though, Diskeeper is a pretty good third-party option.

I'd rather nearly cut my own leg off with a chai......er wait, nevermind. That one has been done already. :D

The only thing I've seen with this that I rate over the Windows one is that you can actually run it while using features, and you can set up a schedule for it to run as well. But, I'm also into day 2 of a 15 day trial on it, so I'm trying to get as much use out of it as possible before I delete it.

diskeeper works well, there was something I didn't like (but I can no longer remember). I use the native one right now.

Not freeware........I bought it for our department. I can't remember how much it cost now.

OK, so I dug around on cnet.com and apparently the big recommendations for this sort of stuff over there are Diskeeper for a defragmenter, and System Mechanic 6 (http://www.iolo.com) for a system maintenance utility. It's got some neat stuff like a registry cleaner, a utility to find and kill programs that set themselves to auto-run at startup, one that tracks down all the useless crap on your computer and cleans it out (internet temp files, unused .exe files, broken shortcuts, etc.)

I downloaded the free trial of that and right now it's cleaning about 700 MB of stuff that the windows disk cleanup utility didn't catch. Which makes me wonder how much porn my computer is watching when I'm not home. ;)

I'm checking out system mechanic, we'll see how it works.

The XP defragger is made by Diskkeeper. It looks exactly like the Diskeeper we used to use here at work way back about 6 or 7 years ago. My theory is the XP one defragments it enough to get the full benefit. Really, how much could a .005% defragmentation of your drive slow down your system? The biggest feature I care about is scheduling, which I don't know if you can do with XPs defragmenter.

I don't think you should defragment too often anyway. It seems like a lot of undo stress on your hard drive. I'm probably wrong though. I haven't researched it.

To top off the stupidity, I ALREADY had a scheduled task set up to defrag my hard drive once a week. It hasn't worked in over 5 months because I used my network account to set it up and we change our passwords every month. So anyway, use the XP one.

I don't think the windows disk cleanup checks the c:\documents and settings\username\local settings\temp of c:\windows\temp file locations. I always manually clean out those 2 locations myself

Yeah, it took a while to clean all those.
