SOONERS WEEKLY
For the Week of October 16, 2006

SOONERS SWEEP No. 13 WEBER STATE
No. 9 OKLAHOMA TO PLAY THREE GAMES THIS WEEKEND AT ACHA D1 SHOWCASE

THIS WEEK’S GAMES - The University of Oklahoma® hockey club (6-0-0) will participate in the 2006 ACHA D1 Showcase this weekend in Youngstown, Ohio. The Sooners will face No. 2 Penn State (3-1-0) on Friday afternoon, No. 6 Lindenwood (4-2-0) at noon on Saturday and unranked Scranton (2-3-0) in a Sunday morning contest.

LAST WEEK’S OU HOCKEY GAMES – Oklahoma traveled to Ogden, Utah for a pair of games against No.13 Weber State University this past weekend. The Sooners swept the Wildcats, winning by scores of 9-3 and 6-0. Forwards Kevin Kennedy, Justin Hall, Adrian Borchgrevink, Keith Denton and Luke Rose scored two goals each during the weekend’s games. Forwards Owen Brewer and Doug Gebbie each had a goal and three assists over the weekend for OU while defenseman Trey Snow added three assists in the pair of games. Sooners goaltender Aaron Schmeilski earned the win on Friday night, stopping 29 of 32 shots. Freshman goaltender Ryan Anderson notched the first shutout of the season for the Sooners the next night, stopping all 23 shots he faced.

RANKINGS – The Sooners are ranked 9th in the most recent ACHA Coaches Division 1 ranking released last Friday. The next ACHA D1 ranking is scheduled to be released this Friday, October 20th.

SCOUTING THE ICERS – Penn State is the No.2 team in the nation according to the latest ACHA D1 ranking. Being near the top of the ACHA rankings is nothing new for the Icers as they have been to the last nine ACHA D1 championship games, winning five of them. So far this season, Penn State has beaten Washington & Jefferson (4-3), Scranton (4-2) and Navy (6-3) and lost to NCAA D1 Robert Morris 6-0. New head coach Scott Balboni fields a strong team led by First Team All-American Defenseman Keith Jordan, Second Team All-American forwards Lukas DeLorenzo and Michael McMullen and senior goaltender Chris Matteo. DeLorenzo was also last season’s ACHA D1 Rookie of the Year. This will be the first meeting between Oklahoma and Penn State on the ice. After the Sooners, Penn State will also play unranked Minot State and No. 13 Weber State at the Showcase.

SCOUTING THE LIONS – Lindenwood is a very familiar opponent to Oklahoma hockey fans as the two teams have played home-and-home series during the previous two seasons. This season, Lindenwood joined the Central States Collegiate Hockey League and CSCHL scheduling commitments prevented a continuation of the home-and-home series with the Sooners. The Sooners are 4-4-0 all-time against the Lions. On the road, OU is 3-1-0 all-time against Lindenwood while going 1-3-0 when hosting the Lions. This will be the first time that Oklahoma and Lindenwood have met on neutral ice. Lindenwood is currently ranked 6th in the latest ACHA D1 ranking. Lindenwood has split home series this season with Missouri State (ACHA D2) and Davenport (ACHA D2) and swept a home series against Missouri (ACHA D2). Lions captain Dan McNabb returns for his senior season along with senior David Easterbrook, junior Quinn Henry and sophomore Henri St. Arnault. Junior Grahame Lippert remains the mainstay in the Lindenwood net for another season as well. Lindenwood will also play No. 15 West Virginia and No. 14 Duquesne at the Showcase.

SCOUTING THE ROYALS – Scranton plays in the East Coast Hockey Association and is currently unranked in the ACHA D1 ranking. Before the playing the Sooners, the Royals will have played unranked Kent State and No. 8 Michigan-Dearborn in the Showcase. Scranton Head Coach Bill Fitzgerald has coached the Royals since 1994 and returns five seniors to his squad this year, including First Team All-ECHA defenseman Dan Stallone. Senior goaltender David Skinner has been between the pipes for 4 of Scranton’s five games this season. Scranton started the 06-07 season strong, beating Rutgers (7-0) and Lehigh (7-2). However, the Royals have lost their last three games heading in to the Showcase, losing to Navy (5-2), Penn State (4-2) and Drexel (5-2). This will be the first meeting on the ice between Oklahoma and Scranton.

BROADCASTS FROM THE SHOWCASE – The only Oklahoma game to be broadcast from the Showcase will be the Friday afternoon contest against Penn State. Sooners fans can listen online to the game courtesy of Penn State’s broadcast team by going to one of three places: to Penn State’s website at www.pennstatehockey.com, to www.FightOnState.com or to the redirect link on front page of the OU Hockey website. The Penn State hockey broadcast will begin at approximately 1:45 P.M. CDT on Friday afternoon. To listen to the broadcast, you will need the Winamp Media Player which can be downloaded for free at www.winamp.com. The OU Hockey games against Lindenwood and Scranton are not expected to be broadcast but scoring updates will be provided on the OU Hockey website during the game.
