Peterson out for season with broken collarbone

ESPN.com news services

Oklahoma running back and Heisman hopeful Adrian Peterson (http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/player/profile?playerId=161717) will miss the rest of the season after breaking his collarbone Saturday. Coach Bob Stoops hopes Peterson can return for a bowl game.

No chance. Will never heal, run the risk of nerve damage, not to mention the impact pain given that he runs into the D-line before our O-line.

Crucifax Autumn
10/14/2006, 03:43 PM
We'll probably end up better just because this is the kid of thing that rallies a team. AD will be on the sideline urging his team on and doing all he can to help, provided it turns out to be a break after further evaluation and providing he doesn't nut up and play through it.

I remember many Sooners being more powerful on the sideline from either injury or NCAA Faggies keeping them out of games than they were on the field.

OklahomaTuba
10/14/2006, 03:43 PM
Sorry, but Patrick hasn't impressed me at all. The kid can hit, but I just havn't seen enough out of him (except the fumbles) to be really excited about him.

Not sure that A.D. would come back - he's got to think about the future. If he did come back, look at the qb situation next year - not good. Next year will be an even bigger "re-building" year. If you, Mark May, and tejas fans everwhere think that he was getting "over used" (what ever in the fawk that means?!?) NEXT year would be tougher than ever.

MAYBE he gets back for a bowl game - if we make it that far - which we should, but even then, he'd be risking MAJOR injury right before he'd be going into the draft . . . that isn't the best situation for him/Bob to be making at that time - JMHO.

Broken collarbone -- been there done that...

...4-6 weeks recovery depending on the severity of the break. Lotsa restrictions on physical conditioning. Bowl game is a possibility depending on the date.

Crucifax Autumn
10/14/2006, 03:48 PM
Well, I didn't see that post by OKC-SLC MD, so maybe he doesn't really know. Again, this isn't the end of the world, and he will either play through it, come back sooner, sit out the year, come back next year, or be a great "extra coach"!

10/14/2006, 03:49 PM
Allen can step up if he can hold the ball...the only good thing about this situation is that adrian may come back next year...but then he has to deal with a less-experienced QB than PT i am so torn up right now about this

I'm not an orthopod, and I'm sure there may be factors such as location, displacement, etc. that can affect the safety of playing with such a fracture. If so, it does not bode well that Bob has already come out and talked like it is serious and likely season-ending based on what they know.

If there's any risk at all, I don't want him to play thru it. And I want him to go to the NFL because he deserves it.

I accept what he says. We just don't know the severity of the break. On the x-ray my collarbone looked like a pencil that someone snapped in half and then jammed back together -- very jagged on both sides of the break. My experience was that I couldn't even work out for about 4-6 weeks, much less play. Given the lost conditioning that will result from the recovery period, I wouldn't expect AD to play in a bowl game since he would be at risk for greater injury and thereby compromise his professional future.

Here is when OU started going down hill!!

The football program at the University of Oklahoma is the most famous aspect of Sooner athletics. Football at OU made its start in September 1895 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1895_in_sports), 12 years before statehood and one year after the first organized football game in Oklahoma Territory (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oklahoma_Territory). The team was organized by John A. Harts (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=John_A._Harts&action=edit), a student from Winfield, Kansas (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Winfield%2C_Kansas) who had played the game in his home state.[1] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oklahoma_Sooners_football#_note-upsdowns) That first team was composed of mostly non-students, such as a local fireman. That first "season" saw the team go 0-1, being blanked 0-34 by a more experienced Oklahoma City (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oklahoma_City) Town Team (they could not even muster a first down (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/First_down)). The first game was played on a field of low prairie grass just northwest of the current site of Holmberg Hall. Several members of the OU team were injured, including Coach Harts, and by the end of the game, the OU team was borrowing members from the opposing squad so they would have a full lineup. After that year, Harts left OU to prospect for gold (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gold) in the Arctic (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arctic).[2] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oklahoma_Sooners_football#_note-kidsgame)

What a dip****...I am glad Harts left...because we would have fired his ***!!

Classic. If you knew half as much as you pretended to know - you'd know 2 things - Jack & Shiot.

We've always played the best players - just about the entire game.

Who are you to say that the "game is in hand."?

By the way - what you're saying now - is what they call Hindsight. (easy to say now - knowing what has happened.)

Not sure if you remember a game up in Eugene that was all but over . . . or so we thought.

Okay, okay... maybe the Home Depot Toilet Bowl. But let's all keep that sunshine pump a-goin'. Don't want to offend anyone here...
So it doesn't count as a bowl, if it isn't a bowl you like?

Is this Madu kid any good? I seen his prospect page but I am sceptical.

For what it's worth, Madu looked pretty good in the fall scrimmage earlier this season.

why did that ISU guy have to try and tackle him? WHY?!?!

1. He hit him on the one yard line! he was gonna score anyway.
2. If, somehow, he had hit him and AD had not have scored, then we would have scored on the next play.
3. We were up by like 20, whats the point trying to hit him?
4. This day just plain sucks, and im trying to get all my emotions out.

Maybe because an 18 point lead is not unsurmountable. We had a 13 point lead against Oregon and, with the aid of the zebras, the Ducks got 14 points in the last 66 seconds.

I am so sorry for what happened to AD today. I admit, I haven't read this whole thread- it's way too long, but I was really upset when I saw the news.

I hope AD still has a chance at the Heisman (could it happen???? It should- nobody else comes close.) and I am sure that Oklahoma will prove to everyone who doubts it - that they are not a one man team. The Sooners will survive this and continue to win their games. But I still feel sad for AD and his family right now.

good luck, Sooners - I'll be rooting for you.

I'm sorry I didn't have the video camera running, but I wondered, out loud, why Peterson was playing about 12 seconds before he broke his collar bone. I think it has something to do with retarded coaching.

Peterson should go to the NFL. His draft stock won't rise any higher. As much as I'd like to see him back, he should go pro, especially given the short life expectancy of NFL running backs.

Given that Peterson is strong and fast, I think his combine and measurables will impress people. However, I won't be surprised if he's not a great NFL back. He doesn't pick up the blitz well, although he's gotten better. He's a below average receiver. And he's a power back that weighs 216. He's not going to run over many people in the NFL. Maybe I'm wrong. I hope I am. I also thought Mark Clayton would be an all-Pro receiver by his 3rd year.

We'll see.

Best of luck AD. Your work ethic and determination always impressed me.

I give the coaches a pass on this one, because it seems like when we try to pull AD and rest him, his replacement fumbles about every other time they get the ball. I think the coaches had decided just not to sub for Peterson unless the game was way, WAY out of reach. This game could have turned around if we had started fumbling the ball away. Heck, we had already given up a safety because of a fumble.

I believe that the coaching staff would have a hard time keeping AD off the field. AD is one of those rare players that not only talks the talk, but walks the walk. He is a winner, and winners want the ball in their hands. Doesn't matter if its 35-7 or 7-35. I admire his determination. The same determination that will probably cost him the remainder of the season. All because he will not be denied the end-zone.

God speed AD

Just a reminder that with all the concern about us losing D. Murray; that this is the same coaching staff, that won a conference championship with AD out, and a convert WR at QB. We are only 2 years removed from this; but like the children of israel, we forget what blessings we have received in the past.

Yeah, but let's not talk about that season's bowl game:eek:

I think your point is let's stay upbeat about it. And I don't see a reason not to still feel okay about this game. It sucks missing DM for this game, but Brown and Madu will be effective enough (and then some) I'm sure.
