View Full Version : Favorite OU plays

Three that stick out in my mind. They may not be "The Greatest" plays (like Roy Williams Superman leap), or the most game-changing, but they're probably closest to my heart for whatever reason.

1) OU-tOSU - Von Schamman kicks the game-winning field goal. I was about 10 years old, and it was the first time I can remember getting so emotional over a football game. I literally had tears in my eyes waiting for the kick. And after. :)

2) Michael Thompson's catch off the fake punt at Alabama in 2003. I had been home from Iraq for just over 72 hours when I got to watch one of my favorite players make a game-changing play. I don't know why, but the way he came back from that accident just puts a lump in my throat. He will always be one of my favorite people.

3) Renaldo Works catch and subsequent run off the shuttle pass against Alabama in 2002. I can't remember a game that I was so for sure we had lost, only to come back and win. Talk about pressure...first home game since the loss at home to OSU in 2001...starting QB goes down, again, to be replaced by Nate Hybl...Alabama comes back from a huge deficit at halftime to take the lead...and Renaldo saves the day. Jumps over an offensive lineman (Jamaal Brown??) as he runs all the way down to the eight yard line with no less than 14 Alabama defenders, coaches, and assistant waterboys hanging off him trying to bring him down.

Others?

Derrick Straits tipped pass in the 01 Orange Bowl to save the go ahead TD. Amazing leap and tip. Watched that whole game the night before OU/TX.

How about Spencer Tillman's leap into the endzone from the 5 yard line against Nebraska in 1983

1) Von Schamman's kick in '77. 13th birthday, best present i could have got that year.

2) Scott Hill's flying hit on Tony Dorsett in '75. I believe that was the last play of the day for Dorsett.

3) Keith Jackson's one handed grab with like 20 seconds left in the 4th quarter against Nebraska to set up game winning field goal in '86.

1. 76 nebraska game - hook and lateral Rhodes to Peacock I believe.
2. 77 Von Schamman's kick
3. 81 Orange Bowl - JC to Forrest Valora 2pt conversion for win
4. 84 nebraska Brian Hall stuffing smith on 4th and goal at the one.
5. 85 nebraska end around with Ketih Jackson, i was standing up as soon as i saw the pitch hollering it's a touchdown.

So many more but those are some of my favorites.

texas aggie ("we're not going to take what they give us, we're going to take what the hell we want") ninja game in 1999. if a play works in a big game, then come right back to it and run it again. that was the finest display of an OU offense keeping a defense off-balance that I have ever seen. (besides that OU/osu BB in norman where a kelvin sampson team was actually passing the ball for lay-ups and 5 to 8 foot open 2s). that ninja game set the tone, I think we need another one to get out of this conservative offensive play calling *yawner* and change the bad-mojo from the blind zebras, not to mention, to let our fans have some fun.

Man, I was there, too. What a hit. Dorsett was vying for the Heisman (and won it). He gained something like ten yards total that day. OU won, 46-10.

I remember Rod Shoate clobbering Tommy Reamon from Missouri once too. Man. What a hit that was. Good memories.

One of my favorites was actually before a play...1975. Had to beat Nebraska to win the Big 8 title. Owen Field was LOUD, LOUD, LOUD. OU had the ball. Steve Davis behind center. He raises his hands for quiet. Nobody complies. Joe Washington comes up out of his stance and raises his hands for quiet.

You could hear a pin drop.

Also...Clint Ingram's interception in the Holiday Bowl. Tony DiRienzo's game-winning field goal against Texas. The final minute of the Missouri game in 1975 and an improbable come-from-behind win.

Beating Nebraska in 1972. Johnny Rodgers caught a long pass and it looked like '71 again...oops, he got pushed out of bounds and re-entered the field of play. No catch. Classic. OU wins, 17-14.

Joe Washington's punt return on Oklahoma State in 1974...last guy to have a chance was the punter. He was candy. I've never seen a human being twist himself up like that before.

12 carries for 17 yards. That play got my letter to the editor published in Sports Illustrated a few years later.

Joe Washington for a TD against Mizzou, followed by Joe Washington for a 2 point conversion against Mizzou in '75. Years later Steve Davis admitted that on the conversion the read said he should keep the ball, but he pitched it anyway because he KNEW Little Joe would get in.

Almost any of the Wishbone plays. You would go from the highest high to the worst feeling ever back to the highest high - all in one the space of one play.

1. The Roy Williams Leap. I don't think I need to say anymore.

2. Quentin Griffin touchdown in the '01 Orange Bowl to seal the nat'l championship.

3. This isn't a single play, but I loved watching OU convert a 1st and 30 vs Texas in 2003. I knew we were gonna win BIG after that conversion.

EDIT: I gotta change my #3 to Antwone Savage's catch vs Nebraska in 2000.

Savage's catch while being interfered with, or Woolfolk's acrobatic catch where he kicked it up and caught it while lying on the ground?

6. Dusty hitting VY and Jackson catching the ball in mid air returning for td.
7. Rocky saying earlier in week how we was going to pick off chrissy and return for td and then does it.
8. Rufus' hit on the Tulsa rb last year and knocking him out.
9. OU ****** in I think 82 and we kick the onside kick off of aggies head and then kick winning fg after playing like crap for 55 minutes
10. stuffing losur 4 times inside the 3 to see who was good team and who was the best team in the country.

Okay, trying to come up with something new that hasn't been mentioned...

Was it Teddy Lehman who got the roughing the passer call for throwing a block after Chrissy threw a pick? The flag was total BS, but Lehman made the right heads-up play and leveled Chrissy like he was a rag-doll.

My other favorite is a little twisted. I thought PT taking a knee on 1st-and-goal against A&M when it was 77-0 was one of the most insulting, humiliating plays ever run on another team. Only running that against Texas would have been more rewarding. *eg*

My other selections, common with others...

TRRW going Superman on Chrissy
Woolfolk's circus catch against Nebraska
The Cale Mary before halftime
