Why doesn't the new Ipods support this type of connection (it's made by Apple for petesake)? I bought one for my original Ipod, back in 2003, and it worked great. Now, the new ones only use USB 2.0. It shouldn't be a problem, but my home computer is pretty old and only has USB 1.1 (which is why I dropped $50 to get the firewire card).

Anybody know a way around this (other than buying a new computer)?

You can use Firewire to charge the iPod just not transfer which of course is what you want to do so this tidbit of information is uselesss to you.

Carry on.

Apple hates backwards compatibility.

Got the card and it works. I still don't understand why they would not support their own format.

Judging from the speeds I'm seeing, USB 2 looks works the same or alittle bit slower than Firewire.

How about it's too close to call, just like the "fumble" that looked like an incomplete pass to me from Saturday.

Firewire.

I remember some geeks on TechTV hyping that up about 7 years ago. Guess it never took off. ;)

They did it because USB 2.0 is much more common than Firewire on PCs. The vast majority of iPods are sold to PC users.

new iPods cost almost what a new computer does anyway ;)

i've had way too many little problems with PC Firewire stuff, i was pretty glad to see them switch over to USB, but of course it was shortly after i bought one

if BSG or Jed posts in here, i might kill someone

Yeah, not so much. Have you SEEN what a MacBook Pro costs these days? ;)

(I have, because I'm waiting for them to offer a BluRay drive on it so I can hedge my bets when I buy my new computer.)

well, the MacBook Pro wouldn't have had this problem ;)

So it went the way of TechTV . . . freakin' "G4TV". I learned way more from Leo Laporte than I have from Adam Sessler.

Firewire was an outstanding cabling standard. About five-six years ago the AV world was seriously looking at replacing all cabling with Firewire, which would make wiring your stereo MUCH easier and make the back of your stereo look much less like R2D2 threw up (and 10 spek points to anyone who can tell me what sitcom THAT reference came from.)
