Oct 6, 1981: The President of Egypt is assassinated

Precisely twenty-five years ago, in a rather portent glimpse of the future the modern world has inherited, jihaadist Muslims assassinate Anwar Sadat, the president of Egypt, as he reviews troops on the anniversary of the Yom Kippur War.

Led by Khaled el Islambouli, a lieutenant in the Egyptian army with connections to the Muslim group Takfir Wal-Hajira, the jihaadis, all wearing army uniforms, stopped in front of the reviewing stand and fired shots and threw grenades into a crowd of Egyptian government officials.

Sadat, who was shot four times, died two hours later. Ten other people also died in the attack.

Despite Sadat's incredible public service record for Egypt -- he was instrumental in winning the nation its independence and bringing a form of democracy to it, his peace negotiation with Israel in 1977-78 brokered by the United States sealed his death warrant in the minds of many Muslims in that embattled part of the world.

Notwithstanding the fact Sadat and then Israeli leader Menachem Begin won the Nobel Peace Prize for their treaty of peace, Sadat immediately became a enemy #1 to millions of Muslims across the Middle East.

Incidentally, Sadat had also angered many Muslims by allowing the ailing Shah of Iran to die in Egypt rather than be returned to Iran to stand trial for his crimes against Islam and the new fundamentalist regime who now governed that country.

Despite the well-known threats on his life, Sadat did not withdraw from the public eye, believing it was important to the country's well-being that he be open and available.

Before executing their plan, Islambouli's team of assassins took hits of hashish to honor a long-standing Middle Eastern tradition which helped to embolden them.

As an aside, your correspondent is unable to confirm if any of the 9-11 hijackers used mind-altering substances prior to their attacks, but we do know several hijackers visited a Boston strip bar the night before boarding the American Airlines jets.

Now, back to our story. As their vehicle passed the reviewing stand, the jihaadi's jumped out and started firing. Vice President Hosni Mubarak(and current Egyptian president) was sitting near Sadat but managed to survive the attack.

Taking over the country when Sadat died, Mubarak arrested over 800 people suspected to have participated in the conspiracy to kill Sadat.

Sadat's funeral was attended by four American presidents

Eventually, charges were brought against 24 men, who went to trial in November. Many of those charged were unrepentant and proudly admitted their involvement while expressing their fervent belief that since Sadat was a traitor and enemy to Islam he had to die.

Islambouli and four others were executed, while the others (except for two acquittals) got various prison sentences ranging from 2 years to life.

We really didn't have any idea where the world was headed
related to Islam and the sobering thing about today is that
too many people think we can peacefully co-exist with Islam
all in the name of "tolerance."

Great, sad, story.

I'm still waiting for somebody to show me a devout Muslim today who isn't a dangerous, hate-filled . . . . never mind

I wonder what the world would be like today had Sadat and Pahlavi (the Shah) been given time to fully establish their governments.

Sadat's government was reasonably well established. He was President for ten years.

One of the intesting things was that his successor once said that Sadat knew he was going to be assassinated sooner or later if he made peace with Israel. He did anyway. Someone once asked Mubarak why he continued/continues to honor the peace accord, and his response was reputedly that "Sadat was a much wiser man than I am. I will not go against him."

If the Shah remained in power maybe the SAVAK could have killed a few more Persians. They'd really love us then.
