I can't find anything on the web. I've googled texas car tags and from that it seems that I only have to pay about $70.

Most vehicle registration fees will run about $70, but these vary from county to county based on special assessments approved by local voters. You will also have the choice of selecting from many types of special license plates for an additional fee.

In general, registering small trucks―even new ones―will cost less than registering even an older passenger-only vehicle. Texas is the land of pickup trucks, and passenger-only cars are considered, and taxed, as something of a luxury.

does anyone know if this is correct?

I'm not renewing. I know I have to do it in person, and get the vehicle inspection done first. I'm trying to find out how much it's gonna cost me.

from a link from that site. http://www.dot.state.tx.us/frequently_asked_questions/vtr.htm

Truck fees are $25 plus an amount based on the weight of the truck.
That's fine and dandy but how do I determine the amount based on the weight of the truck?

Usually it is taken care of by the dealership. Inspection also.

If you bought it out-of-state, just call the local tax office. They are usually nice to polite, clueless folks.

thanks. I think. I bought it in OK. I was just asking about the cost, I know how to register a vehicle in Texas.

What taxes do you have to pay on a new vehicle there? Or do you?

that's what I was trying to find out. No help those people were.

http://www.kiplinger.com/personalfinance/php/cartax.html

says it's 6.25% + $33.00 for title transfer + Approx $70.00 for registration and plates.

That's 3 freaking percent more than I'd pay if it were tagged in OK.

Thanks 1tc, I knew you'd help me out. ;)

Don't do it. You're selling your soul out. I left OK in 2001 for school and still refuse to change my tags. :D
