OU to give up end zone seats in '07

New contract calls for home team to choose its side

06:14 PM CDT on Tuesday, October 3, 2006

By BRIAN DAVIS / The Dallas Morning News

NORMAN, Okla. – To keep the series between Texas and Oklahoma in Dallas through 2010, OU officials had to make a major concession during negotiations.

OU will give up its seats in the Cotton Bowl's south end zone next year and end a decades-long tradition of Sooners fans sitting over the tunnel entrance, which enables them to cheer their team and harass their rivals.

UT fans normally sit on the north end of the stadium, but school officials asked OU to flip sides last year as part of a gentleman's agreement. OU balked at that idea. Now, it's written into the five-year contract extension that the home team will choose its side, athletic directors at both schools said.

"We didn't have to agree to anything," Oklahoma athletic director Joe Castiglione said. "Let's make it loud and clear to everybody, there are always choices.

"While some might favor one choice or the other, we have to respect the best interests of everyone involved and have those decisions reflect the ultimate goal – keeping the game in Dallas."

Texas athletic director DeLoss Dodds said it was the fair thing to do, and he praised Castiglione for agreeing to include the new seating option.

"When you're the home team, you get the choice," Dodds said. "They're the home team this year. Next year, we'll have the option of sitting where we want to sit."

Castiglione said officials thought the decision through.

OU is the home team in even-numbered years, so the Sooners get the choice of sides three times in the current five-year deal. The Longhorns get to choose in 2007 and 2009. OU fans will sit in the south end zone this year, as is custom.

OU officials are banking on UT taking the south end next season. In that scenario, OU fans will sit on the north side and enjoy the full view of a new video board, which measures 83 feet long and 57 feet high. Less than half of the board has been installed for Saturday's game. It won't be complete until January.

The Cotton Bowl stadium expansion is slated to be finished before the 2008 season if a $1.35 billion bond package passes in November. OU would be first to choose between sitting over the tunnel or sitting on the new end with more seats where, theoretically, it should be louder.

"It's going to be beautiful," State Fair president Errol McCoy said. "I think when it's all said and done, we're going to blow people away."

Former OU coach Barry Switzer believes the Sooners have always had an advantage by sitting over the tunnel. Former UT receiver Keith Cash once said OU fans "spit on you and call you every name in the book." They show little mercy on their own, too. Former coach Gary Gibbs was hit by a cup of beer after OU lost in 1992.

The issue of seating came to a head after the 2004 game when it was reported that then-UT defensive coordinator Greg Robinson yelled profanity at OU fans while running off the field.

I think most Horns would rather keep it like it is. We like our end and are willing to spot you whatever the tunnel gives you. It has worked out pretty well over the series for us. (no, history does NOT begin with Stoops) I don't know what DeLoss was thinking unless he just wanted to get a extra concession out of OU. It would be funny if we picked the north side next year when we are home team.

I'd have no problem with going home and home but having a stadium split 50/50 is pretty cool. Even if the Cotton Bowl is a real sewer. What a dump.

I agree, its time to take this series to a home and home.

If I'm not mistaken, this ****ing game is played in TEXAS, EVERY YEAR! The only thing OU enjoyed was having the south end zone and being able to yell when the teams came out. The past 3-5 years have completely ruined this series for me. I've gone to the game every year since 1986 and I'd never heard a Texas fan bitch about the south end zone until the past 5 years. Now their putting up curtains and not allowing people to look over the tunnel. Its a joke.

Seriously, when they move the game to Oklahoma every other year, then I'll worry about where fans sit and having curtains up in the end zone. Until then, lets try to keep a few traditions from this game beyond playing it in a crappy stadium every year. I couldnt care less about a a video board. It means more to me to have wider seats and more seats. This tells you the focus of the people in charge down there.

I refuse to even buy the program when Texas is the home team, you're only giving money to their athletic department.

Here's what DKR Memorial will look like after the improvements in a few years. It will seat over 100K:

http://www.bevosports.com/images/futureDKR.jpg

Before the '07 season, the North seats will be moved up to the endzone. Before the '08 season, a deck will be added to the North endzone to connect the East and West sides. A few years after that, the bowl will be completed in the South.

As far as the seats in the Cotton Bowl, I couldn't care less. I think switching is fair, but I would've been happy to stay on the North side forever. I just think it's funny you Sooners get so worked up about it.

Unfortunately, Castiglione was simply the tool Dodds played to get his way. Like any other tool, Castiglione will be on the sideline Saturday dressed up like a tool and grinning like an idiot. The only person ever willing to do the right thing re: Texas was Tom Osborne. None of the other seven asshat athletic directors from the old Big 8 would listen to him. Castiglione is simply caving and bending over the way Donnie Duncan did in 1994 and 1995 when they allowed Baylor and Tech to sign up along with Texas and A&M.

Look, we've got a company out of Kansas City as the marketer of our memorabilia. We've got recruiting violations in high profile (men's basketball) and low profile (gymnastics) athletic programs. The stadium name was sold to a family/company most people in Oklahoma hate. A car dealership pulled one over on our compliance department.

So, why should we be surprised that Joe C. sold us out on the Cotton Bowl seating? Does anyone really think Castiglione cares about anything but the dollar? Playing a game in another team's home state means nothing to him. "Hey, DeLoss, we'll keep coming down there, just tell us where to sit." Anyone think Port Robertson would have stood for that back in the day?

Here's an idea, Joe. For a million or two dollars, why not just give Texas 2 for 1s - we play them in Austin two years, they play us in the Cotton Bowl and tell us where to sit every third year. You can have the sports marketing firm in Kansas City handle the merchandising aspects of it. You can change the name of of the rivalry from "The Red River Rivalry" to "The Red River Bend Over."

This WOULD be an issue if the curtains we coming down...but don't hold out that hope because now that Texas has played the "our players were getting their feeling hurt" card....the tarp is up for good. With the tarp up, there is no advantage either way.

This was probably a rolling eyes moment for Joe C. Fact is texas gave up more with the view of the new scoreboard and easier entrance/exit from the stadium.

I hear Dodds and Joe C. are working on a no noise rule (for 2011 and beyond) while the opposing team is on offense.

There's guys sitting in the temporary bleachers in the south endzone that ponied up a $2 K donation this year. A lot depends when you started buying tickets. As long as you keep the same donation level each year you keep your seats. I started in 1986 and mine donation is cheap! :)

Joe Castiglione is a wuss. He left Boren and Stoops twisting in the wind on the Oregon referee issue and he bends over every time Texas brings out their jar of vaseline and tells him to assume the position. And please don't throw out how good of a fundraiser he is. Boren is the main guy who brings in the contributions...not Castiglione.

Don't hold your breath on the home and home.

Jerry's World opens in 2009. One of his sons, who is on the Cotton Bowl board, will muck up the works allowing J Jones to go to both schools, tell them he will pay them a truck load of money to have the game played at Jerry's World and a 10 year contract will be signed starting when the current Cotton Bowl contract runs out.

Home and home would suck.

Can you imagine the smell and the sight of ':( ' on the campus of OU.....Owen Field.....Memorial Stadium? Do we really want to contaminate the stature of this University by having these clowns there - I don't? Move it to Jerry's place or leave at the CB. Let 'em have the south end and while we're at it, give 'em a coupon for free appetizers at TGIF.

Don't the schools get all the money from concessions and ticket sales? They're not giving that up.

plus, like when the Big 12 game is at Arrowhead, Chiefs Season Tickets holders get some tickets. Think the schools want Cowboys Season ticket holders to have a crack at tickets?

Waif? Is that why we've won far and away the most conference titles? Is that why the conference headquarters are in Dallas? Is that why Texas got to make all the rules during the formation of the conference, forcing Tom Osborne to take his ball and go home?

Not only does Texas owns the Big XII, your athletic department would be nothing what it is today without the television revenue we brought to the dying Big 8. Was the SWC floundering? No doubt. The Big 8 was circling the toilet as well.

Once again, a football thread degenerates into the number of championship each school has in non-revenue producing/fag sports.

Stick to the subject - Joe C. bent over for DeLoss (probably didn't even get a reach around) and expects us to happy that we get to be the first to view the crappy new video screen the Cotton Bowl people are installing 10 years too late. What a dope.

Fellow Sooners, quit reading anything 'Texas' into this. This is nothing more than our athletic director getting his butt kicked in negotiations. Just because Mack Brown whined about the seating doesn't mean Joe C. had to agree to change it. Just because Texas threatened to move the game doesn't mean he had to cave.

But, as we all know now, he did cave. He supposedly caved in the name of keeping the game within the holy confines of the Cotton Bowl. What a bunch of crap. The game is moving to Arlington or to home and home anyway. Joe just allowed DeLoss to bend him (and us) over for two or three years until the inevitable move occurs.

Dude, I'm starting to worry about your sanity, do you actually believe that? Two very powerful Athletic Directors in a bully fight? They're both caving for messing with tradition, just like trying to move the game to Jerry World, home-and-home, get it away from the fair and all that other nonsense. Joe C. has been a fantastic AD in his tenure and only the loud mouthes have written him off for trying to be fair and classy. this a football board, Herr...take your hairless swimming smack someplace else.

but if you wanna bring aggy into a discussion on the football forum, let's take a look.

In America's most lopsided intrastate rivalry, OU has a commanding 77-16-7 series lead against it's aggy....home or away, OU keeps it's aggy in an embarrassingly fearful check.

Our aggy's never beaten us three times in a row. Ever.

OTOH, Texas only has an average 66-34-5 lead over it's aggy...and the record is a near deadlock at it's aggy's homefield.

Your aggy has won as many as 6 in a row and has a streak of 9 outta 10.

You can't let your aggy get outta line like that.

Aggy from any state has to know that the b1tch-slap is just a moment's notice away....and you have a history of letting yours act out.

Let's see...having Blake as a coach, but getting to sit on the South every year. Yeah, I long for those days.

The discussion has nothing to do with Blake. John Blake was never the athletic director. It's a discussion about athletic directors and the seating at the Cotton Bowl for the Red River Rivalry.

We've had the South End Zone seats since the beginning for a reason - we're in their home state, giving up a home game every other year. Every other athletic director we've had would not have entertained the idea of switching. Joe Castiglione is different - he licks DeLoss Dodds' boots instead of holding his ground.

Regardless of what people who want it to stay in Dallas feel, the game will not stay there. Time and again we have hashed out the inability of the Dallas City Council to understand the importance of the game. Outside of football and the Cotton Bowl, the Dallas City Council has worked hard the past 16 years to turn Dallas into the same type of ghetto craphole that you see in Detroit and Philadelphia. It's well its way.

The game will be moved. Alabama-Aubrn went home and home after decades of holding the game in Birmingham. The Brooklyn Dodgers moved to Los Angeles. The New York Giants moved to San Francisco. The Baltimore Colts moved to Indianapolis. The Cleveland Browns moved to Baltimore. Roger Clemens played for the Yankees and the Red Sox. Ditto Johnny Damon - two years removed from the Red Sox miracle season.

There is no more nostalgia to the people who run the shows. It's all about the almighty dollar. Joe Castiglione is an almighty dollar man. He doesn't give a rat's fatass about our traditions.

Jerry Jones' new stadium will someday hold not only the OU-Texas game, but the Cotton Bowl game as well. He has the money, will, and clout to make it happen whether we like it or not. The Dallas City Council could care less, equating the OU-Texas game to the Grambling-Prairie View game.

Knowing that the game will eventually move no matter where fans sit for the next four to five years at the old Cotton Bowl, Joe Castiglione could have stood up and told DeLoss Dodds to stick it. He didn't. He caved. Let our Kansas City merchandisers fire up their presses for new memorabilia for the Red River Bend Over.

You don't have to like DeLoss Dodds or Jerry Jones to understand that Joe C. let us get screwed. I think all three are tools.

I know you're kidding, Lid. We both live in or around Dallas and know better.

The most ridiculous thing to me is the demand that the city give the same amount of money to Grambling and Prairie View A&M as it gives OU and Texas. It's absurd.

Anyone who thinks the current Cotton Bowl has a prayer of a chance of retaining OU-Texas (and the actual Cotton Bowl game) needs look no further than that incredibly short-sighted mindset to understand why we'll be paying Jerry in 2009 to sit in his new stadium and drink Pepsi while watching OU demolish Texas.

Frankly, it's no big deal to me if the game moves to JerryWorld and the split is in the endzones instead of the 50. It takes away yet another whorn excuse. As long as the game is played in the DFW area, OU's roster is full of Texans and the whorns retain their "too cool" attitude, we will continue to pwn them.

Home and home is still the worst idea ever.

I think its a DAMN shame, and share the frustration with those that recognize this as a further errosion of the tradition of one of my favorite match-ups of the season.

...and that stupid curtain. With the seating reversed, were I a Sooner athlete, I would expect to be wearing pepsi and have my mothers dignity in question.

Wuss move from the whorns.

UT has 47 team national titles compared to what for you? 20? Since the formation of the Big XII, Texas has won 9 national titles to OU's 1. We've won 2 in baseball, 1 in football, 4 in men's swimming, 1 in women's outdoor track and 1 in women's indoor track. Not a contest.

Since the formation of the Big XII, UT has won 73 conference titles. No one else is even close. Nebraska is 2nd and like 25 behind. OU has less overall conference titles than your aggie brethren in Stillwater.

Look!!! It's a :stunned: posing as a :texan: !!!

So why not swap with us? If it's no big deal... You guys know having that tunnel is an advantage and you don't want to give it up.

Sounds more like begging than Deloss "forcing his will" on anyone. Now get back on your knees Herr. I find it humorous you got pwned and won't man up and take it.

Actually, OU has won NC's recently in gymnastics and softball that I can think of. However, unlike :texan: or :stunned: , you won't hear us bringing it up on a football board......or anywhere else for that matter.

You're bragging about track and swimming? Really?

Staff Writer Chip Brown contributed to this report.

dang, no more spitting on people in orange in the odd numbered years
