OKLAHOMA 10, UNLV 1

The University of Oklahoma® Hockey club hit double digits again as they rolled to a convincing 10-1 win over UNLV Saturday night. Ironically, it was the Sooners defense that led the way in offense for OU Saturday. Trey Snow got the Sooners on the board first with a goal at the 6:52 mark. Robert Hetrick scored a little over three minuets later and Danny Force blasted a shot into the UNLV net with under five minutes to go in the period to give OU a 3-0 lead at the end of twenty minutes of play. The Sooners power play cranked up in the second period as Greg Smith, Sean Castle and Doug Gebbie all scored goals with the man advantage to give OU a 6-0 lead at the second intermission. Hetrick scored again to put the Sooners up 7-0 before UNLV snapped OU’s shutout bid with a goal at 6:22. Castle potted his second of the evening on a nifty short-handed redirection from Justin Hall while Hetrick scored again with less than five minutes to go in the game to cap his hat trick. Greg Curtiss topped the Sooners scoring off with another power play goal to make tonight’s final 10-1. All told, the Sooners defensemen accounted for seven of the 10 OU goals in the game.

The new USA Hockey enforcement standards were in full effect all evening as the Sooners were whistled for 62 penalty minutes while UNLV racked up 96 penalty minutes during the game. Sooners goaltender Ryan Anderson stopped 10 of 11 UNLV shots while his counterpart, Rebel goaltender Chris Tate, was pelted with vulcanized rubber all night long, making 50 saves on 60 OU shots. OU was 5 for 24 on the power play while UNLV was 0 for 14 on the power play.

With the win, the Sooners improve their record to 4-0-0 while the loss gives UNLV a 1-3-0 record. Oklahoma next plays on October 13 at Weber State in Ogden, Utah.
