The Tesla. 250 miles on a charge, 0-60 in "under 4 seconds" and it looks cool too! 'Bout time. Get one soon for $100k.

Thats cool.

Now if we had some renewable electricity to fuel it, we'd be in business.

you mean electricity doesn't just come out of the socket?

Now if we had some renewable electricity to fuel it, we'd be in business.

We're already in business if that's the primary obstacle; it's not renewable electricity, but the turbines that the electric companies use are waaaay more efficient at converting fossil fuels to usable energy than the ICE in a consumer vehicle is.

IIRC, I think the best heat-to-electricity efficiency you get out of vehicle ICEs is something approaching 40%, and the best steam turbines approach something like 80%.

Honda has a cool idea about putting hydrogen units on each home, that charge electric cars and produce a homes energy as well.

Very cool idea me thinks.

I don't see how that provides any benefit over the existing electrical grid.

Hydrogen is a convenient way to store energy, but just like oil, the hydrogen has to come from somewhere. It makes sense in a vehicle because you can't have a power cord hanging out of the back of your car as you're going down I-35, but in a home, that's not really a problem.

... maybe if the home is far from the grid, or has its own method for generating electricity... but that's about it.

Can you mount one of those windmills to the car?

yermom

hmm... maybe with that and a bunch of solar cells it could store energy while it's parked

Take a closer look at that picture, I'm pretty sure you can see some 18-wheelers on the bottom of it. :)

Not that I have 100k laying around, but even if I did I'd want to see some of the bugs worked out of the technology. My hat is off to those who are putting their money behind this though. Sure as I ran out and bought a car that could go 250 miles on a charge, the next day one would come out that could go for 1000 miles.

How far does it go on a charge when you're regularly demonstrating the 0-60?

The effiency of the turbine itself may be even higher than 80%. However the cycle effiency is still down in the 40% range.

Q:
Can I trade in my Porsche?
A:
No. We do not take trade-ins at this time.
