The University of Oklahoma® Hockey club continued to rack up the goals as they beat UNLV Friday night by a score of 13-1. Along the way, the Sooners also got a taste of the new USA Hockey penalty enforcement standards as a total of 53 penalties were called in the game. UNLV stunned the Sooners early with a gritty goal by Anthony Marinello almost seven minutes into the game. The Sooners evened the score about ten minutes later when Greg Smith slipped a wrister into the Rebel net at the 16:18 mark of the first period. Danny Force scored the first of eight OU power play goals of the evening with 47 seconds left in the first period to put OU up 2-1 at the break. In the second period, OU received power play goals from Jordan Novak, Robert Hetrick, Luke Rose, Wil Petty and Force as well as an even strength goal from Owen Brewer to take a commanding 8-1 lead after 40 minutes of play. Justin Hall and Force scored power play goals for OU in the third period, Adrian Borchgrevink scored short-handed and Kevin Kennedy and Matt Pangrac had even-strength tallies for the Sooners on the way to the 13-1 final.
During the evening, the Sooners were whistled for 66 penalty minutes while UNLV had 81 penalty minutes in the game. Sooners goaltender Aaron Schmeilski stopped all but one of the 23 shots he faced from UNLV. Starting Rebel goaltender Chris Tate stopped 19 of 27 shots in two periods of action while replacement goalie Tito Munoz stopped 13 of 18 shots in the third period. OU was 8 for 24 on the power play while UNLV was 0 for 16 on the power play.
The Sooners are now 3-0-0 while UNLV drops to 1-2-0. Oklahoma hosts UNLV again Saturday evening at 8:30 P.M. in Oklahoma City.
