Congressman quits after messages to teens found

From CNN's Dana Bash
CNN Washington Bureau

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Republican Rep. Mark Foley resigned Friday from the House after sexually explicit instant message conversations with teenage congressional pages attributed to him surfaced.

The instant message conversations were published on ABCNews.com and other Internet blogs.

According to ABCNews.com, someone using the screen name "Maf54," which ABC identified as Foley, communicated with congressional pages.

ABCNews.com posted these instant message exchanges:

Maf54: You in your boxers, too?
Teen: Nope, just got home. I had a college interview that went late.
Maf54: Well, strip down and get relaxed.

ABCNews.com also cited this exchange:

Maf54: What ya wearing?
Teen: tshirt and shorts
Maf54: Love to slip them off of you.

A third example from ABCNews.com:

Maf54: Do I make you a little horny? http://events.clowningaround.com/images/Lookalike%20Photos/Austin%20Powers%20shagadelic.jpg
Teen: A little.
Maf54: Cool.

E-mail exchange questioned

Earlier Friday, a former congressional page questioned e-mails Foley had sent to him, describing it as "sick." Foley, a Florida representative, apparently sent the e-mails in August 2005, when the male page was 16 years old.

In the e-mails, which were obtained by the Washington-based Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington, Foley discussed a second page, saying "I just emailed [him]... hes such a nice guy... acts much older than his age... hes in great shape... i am just finished riding my bike on a 25 mile journey now heading to the gym... whats school like for you this year?"

Foley then asked the page for a picture.

The young man, who forwarded the e-mails to another congressional staffer, called the e-mails "sick, sick, sick."

"Maybe it is just me being paranoid, but seriously. This freaks me out," the page wrote in the e-mails obtained by CREW.

A spokesman for Foley told CNN the congressman acknowledged he had an e-mail exchange with the former page but flatly denied that it was anything inappropriate.

Is the Republican Party on the decline?

Seems like a stretch to correlate a sick bastage to the decline of an entire political party. Besides, this has already been discussed at length.

I just think the Party is starting to have quite a few issues as we near the next elections.

I'm not implying they are all like Foley...just that lots of them ran on this Red / Blue State stuff and guys like Foley were really pink states like Barney Franks.

That would be like a Republican trying to associate Democrats with terrorists because they share one "talking point" (which happens to be an aversion to torture).

The only way a Republican wins the next Presidential election is if the Democrats put Hillary up.

Wait, I take that back, the Democrats are notorious for clutching defeat from the claws of victory.

It's amazing anyone gets elected in this country.

What a hypocrite!!

In one message, ABC said, Foley wrote to one page: "Do I make you a little horny?"

In another message, Foley wrote, "You in your boxers, too? ... Well, strip down and get relaxed."

Foley, as chairman of the Missing and Exploited Children's Caucus, had introduced legislation in July to protect children from exploitation by adults over the Internet. He also sponsored other legislation designed to protect minors from abuse and neglect.

"We track library books better than we do sexual predators," Foley has said.

And he once accused the Supreme Court of "siding with pedophiles over children."

Foley was a member of the Republican leadership, serving as a deputy whip. He also was a member of the House Ways and Means Committee.

You guys remember when Barney Frank (D-MA) was busted for running a ghey escort service out of his house in DC? Its been about 20 years ago now. He's still in the House I believe.

How about that wierd looking Gary Condit (D-CA) who was doing that young gal whose skeleton they finally found in the woods in Rock Creek Park? It's been a few years now, but her name was Chandra Levy.

Anyhoo, here's the diff between donkeys and elephants. When donkeys do stuff like this, they just get all indignant and remain in the job unless/until fired.

When elephants do this sort of thing, at least they do the honorable thing and commit profesional (and sometimes real) suicide.

When elephants do this sort of thing, at least they do the honorable thing and commit professional (and sometimes real) suicide.

i think both sides deserve the same bashing when caught in these circumstances, or similar, or not even similar but morally pathetic situations. (i thought clinton should have resigned rather than put the country through the embarrassment of what he did... but had he, it would not have made him an honerable man.) trying to tie "honorable" to a man who just resigned because he got caught making lewd, sexual comments to a child is... a stretch.

furthermore, any political suicide committed here was not due to resignation, but do to his actions prior to resignation.

this may be the first "spin" that has actually surprised me.

Heh, did you ever see that tape of Congressman Dracula....err Lantos...grilling Craig Livingstone back in the early 90's. Craig Livingstone was a Clinton appointee for some security position within the White House (having to do with internal security for background checks, etc). The guy was an absolute disgrace and worthless piece of flesh, and Lantos gets him before his committee and basically tells him that honorable men have committed suicide for a lot less than what he had done.

I didn't make myself clear. The resignation/suicide, etc. is an attempt to restore one's honor by taking your lumps, leaving quietly and not making a fuss. For stand-up kinda guys, that is the first step down that path to honor restoration. Alternatively, some folks choose to be brazen about their misdeeds when busted and try to turn it into a "no big deal" let's just "move on" kinda thing -- or chalk it all up to "they're out to get me, I was framed."

This matter has greater implications than one perverted hypocrite from Florida because a group of House Republicans apparently knew about this recent e-mail at least a year ago, and aside from stopping contact between Foley and this teenage boy, nothing else was done to look into Foley's conduct further and protect other pages who might have been victimed by Foley. This is where the real serious political fallout potentially lies, if there was a coverup by the party of "family values."

Yeah, it sucks when someone takes one of your comments and takes it to the radical extreme then bashes it and acts like you're an idiot, doesn't it? Kinda hinders any kind of rational discussion that might have otherwise occurred.

So why do you do it so often?

If Foley's IMs/emails to underage pages were an open secret in Washington, it just shows how morally corrupt that place is.

I remember when I was a page in the state legislature 30 years ago (no, nobody hit on me), the toilets in the capitol building always smelled like upchuck. What's up with that? Going into legislature drunk is questionable, but to the point of throwing up?

I don't believe this. I think if there was any possible way to slime his way out of this, he would have taken it. In this case, there was no other option. It's a politician thing, not a party thing.

The elephants were dead wrong and have no excuses for covering for that disgusting creep. But I have no doubt whatsoever, none, that the donkeys would have done the very same thing if Foely were a donkley, and the elephants would have condemned them just as much as the donkeys are doing now. Hypocrisy is rampant and non-partisan.

Foley should have committed suicide, btw, never mind about the "poor old alcoholic" me shtick.

What's worse is this guy was the chairman of the Missing and Exploited Children Committee. I think it shows how power corrupts. The leadership was more worried about how this might affect the Party and its hold on power than protecting children.

The Republicans need to be slapped in November.

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. - Former Rep. Mark Foley's attorney said Tuesday that his client was molested between the ages 13 and 15 by a clergyman.

Foley had represented the West Palm Beach district for 12 years and was seeking re-election until his sudden resignation last week after the disclosure of lurid online communications with teenage congressional pages.

"This is part of his recovery," Roth said, declining to identify the clergyman or the church.

Roth also announced for the first time that Foley is gay.

He insisted Foley never had sexual contact with a minor.

Everything's better now I guess. Amazing.
