OKLAHOMA 16, NEBRASKA 2

The University of Oklahoma® Hockey club cranked up the offense during the first game of the 2006-2007 season with a 16-2 win over the University of Nebraska Friday night in Oklahoma City. Freshman forward Jordan Novak potted the first goal of the season at the 6:25 mark of the first period. Nine seconds later, Kyle Allan scored for the Sooners to put OU up 2-0. The goals by Novak and Allan broke the old OU Hockey record of 11 seconds (vs. Kansas, 2003) for the quickest pair of goals. Nebraska tightened the game with a power play goal less than a minute later and it looked for a brief moment as if the game might go the way of past great OU/Nebraska football and basketball clashes, with the contest’s outcome being decided in the last few minutes of the game.

However, it was not to be as offensively it was almost all Sooners from there on out. Luke Rose and Doug Gebbie scored power play goals for OU before the first intermission to send the Sooners to the locker room with a comfortable 4-1 lead. In the second period, the Sooners poured on the offense. Kevin Kennedy scored a natural hat trick, Adrian Borchgrevink scored two goals and Allan, Wil Petty, Michael Gray and Danny Force each added individual goals in the stanza. The Sooners skated off the ice after 40 minutes of play with a dominating 13-1 lead. Kennedy scored his fourth goal of the evening, Borchgrevink finished off his hat trick and Rose added his second goal of the night to put OU up 16-1 early in the third period. Despite the lopsided score, Nebraska captain Van Hough never quit playing hard and it paid off for him with a nice goal late in the period to make the final score 16-2.

Sooners goaltender Tom Schaul stopped 8 of the 10 shots he faced from Nebraska. His Husker counterparts in net did not fare as well. Starting Nebraska goaltender Sam Spomer stopped only 22 of 32 OU shots before being replaced in the middle of the second period by Justin Leu, who stopped just 15 of the 21 Oklahoma shots he faced. With the offense clicking right out of the gate, OU was 4 for 5 on the power play while Nebraska was 1 for 4 on the power play.

With the win, the Sooners begin the 2006-2007 season with a record of 1-0-0 while Nebraska drops to 1-2-0. The two teams meet again Saturday afternoon in Oklahoma City at 2:30 P.M.
