The US Navy is retiring the F-14 :(

I know they are getting cooler toys these days, but this was always one fun bird to see.

I sat next to an F18 pilot on his way home from a tour in Iraq, and he dogged the F14's out.

Aaahh...the F-10 Goose. We're winning the war in Afghanistan with those right now.

reminds me of the simpsons:
Sideshow Bob cuts through the side of the blimp which deflates. He
grabs Bart and heads for the Harrier.

Lisa: He's getting away! [gets covered by the blimp]
Hapablap: Oh...not the Harrier! We've got a war tomorrow.
Bob: [sees control panel with two buttons, STOP and FLY] God bless the idiot-proof Air Force.

yeah Hornet jocks tend to be like that...primarily because their bird was designed more for dogfighting than the Tomcat was. However if I needed to blow a muh****ah' up from 3+ miles away in air combat, I'd take a Tomcat over nearly everything not tagged as a Mig-31.

Since it carries the AMRAAM, the F-18 is just as effective at BVR (beyond visual range) engagments as the F-14. Where nobody could touch the F-14 was super-duper-long-range engagements with the Phoenix missile.

well it HAS been 15+ years since I paid attention to that stuff...I was too lazy to look up the range of either the Phoenix or the AMRAAM

So, is the Phoenix missile being retired too?

Wasn't the F-14 the only platform that carried the Phoenix?

and dang.. those were big f'in' jets.

The Navy version of the F-111 was supposed to carry it too, but that never panned out.

the AIM54 Phoenix was retired 2-3 years ago. We'll miss you, you 100 mile range, fat-as-a-telephone-pole projectile of death.
