After 3 games, Oklahoma defensive rankings:

Rushing D: 94th in NCAA
Passing D: 96th in NCAA
Pass Efficiency D: 82nd in NCAA
Total D: 97th in NCAA
Scoring D: 75th in NCAA

Even Florida Atlantic who got lit up by the sheephumpers, North Texas who got lit up by texass and Washington who got lit up by us have better numbers.

Here are the only schools with worse numbers that us in total defense - ALL other D1 teams have better.

So my 2 questions are: WTF? and WTF?

This is NOT ACCEPTABLE.

98 Central Mich. 3 228 1211 5.31 12 403.67 1 2 0

Oh, and P.S.

We have a grand total of 2 big sacks on the season which puts us in a tie for:

105th in the NCAA.

That is horrible. It sure looks like there's a breakdown somewhere in the defense. It would be one thng if we were stopping the run but still giving up the big passplay. We're not stopping anything.

Sorry to say but the Bobby Jack Wright move to DB has not been successful to this point and for whatever reason the entire defens has taken a huge step backwards under Brent.

Yep, these numbers are far worse than Rex Ryan rolled out there. I am just not understanding how this happened. And don't say it's the talent, good lord - we don't have as much talent as TCU?

If we had the TCU defense, we'd be unstoppable.

it's pretty shocking to see those numbers.

Nope.

It will be really bad if we have a game where some team puts them on the field all day IMO.

IMO, it all starts up front, and we have been dominated so far; without a strong push from the tackles, and a good pass rush from the ends, the rest of the weaknesses on a team will get exposed, and that's what's happened so far; if the front 4 can step it up, that would surely help solve a lot of our problems

Yes, it would help, but let's be honest here - we have been sucking it up at every position on D. Everyone is missing tackles, everyone is out of position, play calling is bad. It is a comprehensive effort that earns you rankings like #97.

Even Rufus - and I think we can all agree Rufus is NFL-quality talent - hasn't looked very good. And we've SEEN him dominate a game before, so what has changed? did Rufus somehow get worse (unlikely, I think) or is he not being properly prepared for the upcoming opponent?

Well, he sure hasn't gotten better, he's not being put in the right position and he's not getting any help.

we haven't had pushover opponents. Give us teams like FAU and Texas A&M (holy **** did you SEE them yesterday???) and we'll take off.

Well FAU and A&M are both ranked well ahead of us in total defense. As are osu and Army in case you were talking about the other side. So I'm not really sure what the hell your point is.

Did you also notice that powerhouse UAB scored a big fat nothing at UGA? In addition to no points, UAB was held to 163 yards of total offense - 95 via the pass and 68 vs. the run.

Yeah, but if we shut out MTSU and leave them with neg yardage, we'll still be somewhere in the 70's rating wise.

Yep, sad to say but Blake put better performing defenses on the field - we'll at least one (98).

This defense is supposed to be full of talent and is supposed to be helping a new QB adjust. Instead it has turned one instant replay into a dark day in Sooner history.

OUr defense gave up 501 yards, 158 yards rushing and 343 yards passing. I don't remember the last time OU gave up that much to a team ranked as low as Oregon.

Our performance thus far and those stats are sufficient justification to hand Venables his walking papers.

It's not an issue of talent. I'm no expert but it's just the players being out of position. Also, did anyone notice that we can't can't even get pressure on the qb if we bring the blitz? That's a big problem. I think the offenses must be able to read us pretty easily. We need to disguise our D better and bring in some effective blitzes.

Brent saved his job with the turnaround. Had the Sooners continued their pace to finish around 97th in total defense, the Sooners wouldn't have been playing tonight, we'd probably be around 8-4 and Brent would be gone.

Very few DCs remain when your defense ends up 97th.

In all honesty if anybody thought a Stoops team was going to continue to stay around 97th in the country in Total Defense, you were either ignorant or had a blind hatred of all things Venables. We shouldn't dig up post though, Alot of people were implying Stoops should leave after our start. People were saying we would be lucky to win the Independence Bowl. People were in full meltdown mode around here

Was our D playing poorly first 3 games? - yes. Did they turn it around and become one of the best D units in the NCAA and win the Big XII Championship? - yes.

What exactly is the issue in dragging this old post up? There weren't too many people praising the D after the Oregon game. All I said was that it wasn't acceptable - which it wasn't - and that it needed to be fixed - which it was, in a big way.
