View Full Version : NCAA Investigation

I just emailed the NCAA and asked them to investigate why everytime Oklahoma is in a tight game on the road now that the refs suddenly go blind in the last 2 minutes of the game. It is one thing to just lose a game outright but to get it stolen away after you won it is unjust to say the very least.

What disciplinary action will be taken against the replay crew of the Oklahoma/Oregon game? They missed the blatant touch of the onsides kick by the coverage team before it traveled the required ten yards. They missed the recovery of the onsides kick by Oklahoma. They missed the tipped pass on a play that resulted in a pass interference call. This is gross incompetence.

Man, you guys run a crooked conference. You let USC get away with flagrant NCAA violations and you use your refs to turn games. Do you do this to bolster your weak second rate teams?

So why can't the NCAA president or director come in and declare that an injustice was done and award the game to OU? Is there some kind of rule that would prevent it? I know it would be unprecedented but in this case it would be the only fair thing to do considering how blatant this onside call was made.

Perhaps it isn't Bob's place to go into a rant in a post-game interview, maybe the athletic director or president of OU should get some lawyers and sue on some grounds. It appears the national media isn't giving this issue the proper air-time and analysis. So it is up to OU officials to push this in the face of the nation with videos depicting that the "disputed" illegal touch by the Oregon player is not as objectionable as No. 23 clearly grabbing the ball that squirted from away the pile. Or how a tipped pass cannot be scene by this officials.

I am no way near to getting over this, my outrage is only intensified because I am a OU fan but all college fans should be equally outraged. I am only left one conclusion and that is these refs made a conscious effort to make incorrect calls. Incompetence and idiocy do not cover these mistakes.

The NCAA is probably the most ineffective organization just slightly behind the U.N. Nothing will be done. Too many $$$$$ from NIKE and t.v. If we all knew it was rigged who'd keep watching. Well, I guess there's the WWF crowd. Congress needs to look at it. What was the betting line on the game? Who are the refs and booth monkeys? How much do they make? What financial difficulties may they be in? Are you freakn' kidding me? Those calls were so obvioius it's mind blowing. NO sane, honest person could have seen different. EVERYBODY saw the sky was blue - they told us it was green.

EXACTLY. No way this wasn't rigged. The entire game. How about when we had the ball 1st and goal and the refs stuck us with 3 penalties in a row until we were barely still in FG range. WTF??? 8 penalties all game but 3 in a row at the goal line. Not offsides, or facemask, or illegal reciever, or illegal motion or something that would have been obvious but holding calls that they can call almost every play on every team and are hard to notice.

actually there were some motion penalties that killed us in this game. I actually thought the officials called a fair game until late.

remember the fumble by their guy the refs reviewed? on one of the angles, you could make a case that there was enough info to overrule the call on the field of fumble, but they didn't.

It's time for the NCAA to step up and start fining game referees and instant replay judges. Someone needs to be held accountable for these gross incompetences. Not just for OU, but for ALL college games.

As fans, losing games like this hurts. But for the college player who gave everything on the field, it's a lot worse. Bad calls like yesterday, could mean the difference for these kids getting to play in a BCS Bowl or Home Depot Toilet bowl game.

Again, someone needs to be held accountable.

Just to entertain this scenario that will never happen. Then what happens when the secondary blows a coverage and Mike is on the sidelines? Or the front seven is as soft as butter? Start making excuses about how Mike doesn't have his 'magic touch' anymore?

I can't beleive no one has caught this! There was another blown call on the onside kick even more obvious than the ten yard touch call. NCAA rules state that in order for a ball to be live it has to (A. Touch the ground or (B. Touched by a receiving team player. Here is the inportant part.....If the ball does not touch the ground on the kickoff then nonimpedment rules apply. The kicking team must give the receiving to a fair opportunity to catch the ball. If you watch the kickoff on the onside kick the kicker kicks the ball straight up into the air off the tee never touching the ground. Then OU was very obvioulsly interfered with. BS BS BS BS!!

The ball hit the ground.

Kickers today are being trained to kick the ball hard into the ground so it pops into the air effectively waiving the rule that you must give the receiveing team an opportunity to catch the ball.

In the NFL you cannot initiate contact with the receiving team prior to the ball traveling 10 yards. Once the ball is in the air off the bounce, and it has traveled 10 yards, it is a "jump ball" and it becomes a free-for all.

I have a feeling that this one will eventually change in the NCAA... but it will take receiveing players getting hurt before it does.

While your argument is technically valid, it doesn't hold water because the ball was kicked into the ground.

I was on the NCAA website and sending a message before all the players had made it to the locker room. As was stated previously in this thread, our last 2 losses were due to not only incompetent officials, but replay officials that were also incompetent, as well as BIASED!
After the NCAA message, I tried to get on this site, and couldn't, so I knew there were plenty of others as livid as I was.
I was also glad to see that by last night, the media was even on the case and on our side, even ESPN, which was a surprise. I guess it was so flagrant, they couldn't ignore it, although they also spent plenty of air time gloating over the poor performance of the Big 12 overall.
Our team performance was lacking in the usual areas again, but by gawd, they stepped up to win that game in the 2nd half, and to have the win taken away by some incompetent morons is a travesty that cannot be tolerated due to apathy, so give 'em hell everyone, they damned sure deserve it!

We all feel that way mb. We all do. :(

Overall, the on-field officials' performance was better than average, save the last 1:08. The last 1:08 however, was probably some of the worst I have seen since the Sand Aggie game last fall.

Simply put: I asked 3 questions to the Pac-10:

1. How can the on field officials and video replay officials miss the illegal "first touch" but #19 in green. I can see how the Zebras could - being screened, out of position, etc. However, the video replay official should have caught the illegal touch... here's how:

- Watch the replay that was zomed in on Kelly as he jumped. Notice the position of his feet when he jumped (on the 45 yard line). Notice which direction he jumped (downfield towards the Oregon end zone.) This clearly shows that Kelly was ahead of the 45 yard line. Now enter #19 for Oregon. He essentially "fronts" Kelly, and punched the ball past the 45. Two items to note here: 1) an offensive player cannot bat or punch a ball down field in an effort to gain yardage. It is essentially the same as fumbling forward - the ball would be brought back to the spot of the fumble, provided it does not touch an opposing player (which it did). 2) As eveyone here and around the country (except in the 503, 541, and 971 area codes) knows - Since the ball did not travel 10 yard on the onsides kick, it is dead at the spot of first touching by the kicking team.

How the replay officials missed this is beyond me and everyone else.

2. The officials on the field never determined who had possession of the ball after the ball was pushed forward. One Oregon player did have an opportunity to pick up the ball, but failed to do so as it rolled under an OU player... right to Allen Patrick. At this point, it is up to the replay officials to assist the Zebras to make the right judgement of possession. They **never made the effort to determine possession of the ball after the first touching**. It's too bad they did not have Channel 9 OKC/6 Tulsa's camera angle. It was clear cut proof that Oregon never had the ball and Patrick did.

3. The tipped ball should have been obvious. As an official, you should notice tendencies of the QB's trows thoughout the game. Does he throw a tight spiral? Does it wobble (a la Heupel)? Is it different when he's under pressure? Dixon tended to throw spirals all day. I never really saw a "wounded duck" (no pun intended) from him. So - why was the ball flailing wildly when it reached the interefered receiver? Watch the replay - it started as a spiral, then became a wobbly duck after it passed a leaping lineman in white. The low defensive end zone replay showed it.

Again - how did the replay official miss it?

I asked the Pac-10 to explain why their failure to use the instant replay system correctly and accurately cost a team a victory - one that was seen by the entire nation, and exposed their replay system and officials as effectively broken. :pop:

I also jokingly asked if I needed to send in an application to become one of their replay officials... I obviously made the right calls. ;)

i sent a "report an error"

The PAC-10 Conference should be embarrased by the officiating in yesterdays Oklahoma/Oregon game. It's one thing when a team gets beat by a better opponent. It's a different matter entirely when a team is "beaten" by ignorance, bias, and general lack of understanding of the most basic rules in American football.

The PAC-10 conference should be ashamed and humiliated at the display of its officials.

If the Pac-10 administration doesn't acknowledge the flagrantly bad calls by it's officiating crew at the OU/UO game, they will lose all respect of all other conferences in the NCAA. And if I were another PAC10 team, I wouldn't want to play with those refs either. No telling which blinders they'll have on the next time. The PAC10 is on the verge of becoming the laughing stock of the entire country. That crew should be reprimanded and suspended from future games to show everyone that even the PAC-10 cares about it's image.

Sam -

These were Pac-10 officials. The contracts to play the games between the schools determine who the referees are in terms of conference affiliation. So in essence, we got to have the relatively competent Big XII official in Norman in 2004. The trade off was what we got yesterday afternoon.

On the subject of officials and conference affiliation - methinks it's about time the NCAA steps in and takes over the assignment of referees for games. Have all crews under a central office, assigned on a weekly basis and graded out similar to the NFL process. Also make officials accountable for their actions - make them available to the press after games and make their suspensions/fines/releases public as well.

Replay officials - right now it's a hodge podge of how it is done in terms of equipment/officials. Some conferences (e.g the Big 10) use a central office in Chicago to review the calls - away from the emotion and action of the games. The NHL does the same thing with their goal reviews. Unfortunately some conferences still rely on essentially a glorified TIVO at the stadium.

Best Solution: A replay official in the press box, with access to the screens the central office sees. His responsibility is to notifiy the on-field referees that a review is upcoming - use the same type of two-way communication system that they use in soccer.

I like replay reviews - as long as they are correctly called.
