So, my mother (70) has been diagnosed with a cantaloupe-sized tumor on her ovary. We don’t yet know if it is benign or malignant. They were getting ready to schedule surgery and her ekg revealed that she has had a heart attack (they called it a silent heart attack often only experienced by women.) Thus now she has to visit a cardio specialist to determine whether she can handle the surgery.

As some of you know I live in Austin and have been wanting to get back to OKC to be around family (sister, nieces and nephews etc) since my first son was born. Just to be around family, friends and attend things I enjoy, ie: ou football, blazer hockey etc… I have delayed this because life has just been to comfortable. All work no play.

We have lived comfortably in Austin because I have a stable job that pays well so my wife has not had to work and we are comfortable enough that we could move back to OKC and live for a while without having to find a job.

It is scary and I know I may sound like a namby pamby about this. I don’t know if I am thinking straight right now. I have faith that things would work out and I would be happier in OKC I think than I am comfortable in Austin. I always knew this day would come as my folks got older but I guess I never looked at it as today ,if you know what I mean.

Anyone have experience with the money vs quality of life issue? What did you do and got anything that may help me decide what to do.

I appreciate your thoughts very much and wish the best for you and yours.

Thanks,

Prayers for you and your mom.

As for money vs quality: I could have stayed in the big-firm-private-practice-lawyer rat race and made 2 or 3 times the money I make working for Uncle Sam. Sometmes I miss the money and the challenge, but then I WAKE UP and realize that I love my job and my colleagues, I have regular but flexible hours, and I have had plenty of time to be with my daughters as they are growing up, playing sports and all that. NO REGRETS.

Prayers on their way.

As to the other issue, I and my wife have also foregone double or triple our current salaries by staying in Oklahoma. To me, it was a no-brainer since our child sees all his grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, etc. on a daily basis (and we have never needed a non-family member babysitter). Besides, I believe OKC is on the verge of massive growth economically and may make the pay difference much less of a gap than it is today.

Thank you all very much. Money is seeming to be a very small issue at this time. I know it is necessary but not worth the sacrifice I am thinking.

You, your mom and your whole family will be in my prayers. As far as knowing whether or not to move home, just ask God to give you some insight.

Thoughts and prayers for you and yours.

We left OK in 1988 due to my husband's job. I still wish we had been able to stay in OK.
