17 people arrested after Buckeyes win

Associated Press
Posted: 6 minutes ago

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - Couches and mattresses were set on fire outside houses in Ohio State University student neighborhoods, and three people were struck by a car following the No. 1-ranked Buckeyes' 24-7 win over No. 2 Texas on Saturday night.

There were 35 to 40 fires set in student neighborhoods, said Columbus police Sgt. David Howson, whose department arrested about 17 people, five of them on arson charges. A trash bin also was set ablaze, burning two nearby cars, he said.

Battalion Fire Chief Kevin O'Connor said he was treated for bumps and bruises after he and two others were struck by a car that came through a temporary command post set up in the driveway of a student union building.

The two others, an Ohio State official and her husband, were treated early Sunday at Ohio State University Medical Center for minor injuries.

Most students haven't returned to campus because fall classes don't start until Sept. 20, Howson said. Still, police concentrated their patrols on the campus area last night.

"This happens on big games, so we were prepared for it," Howson said.

The victory kept the Buckeyes (2-0) in perfect position for a run to a college football national title. Texas, which saw its 21-game winning streak snapped, is the defending national champion.

You'll have to forgive the poor tOSU students for their rioting in this case. You see, they thought they had just won the National Championship. Apparently, nobody has taken the time to explain the concept of a "regular season" to the students in columbus, and they just figured that knocking off the defending champs passes the title on to you. Riots will likely happen again when they learn that they actually have to play another game this year.

sadly humorous, he sounds completely resigned and unsurprised.

It always seems like it's the northern schools (and cities) that have this obsession with burning and tearing up their own stuff after big wins. I honestly can't think of the last time I heard of a southern city rioting after a big win. Let me know if I'm missing something here.

don't know, I'm sure most cities have fan "celebrations" they wish never happened...but it does seem to occur with great frequency in the Great Lakes area ('specially Detroit).

It's the Alabama way to gain National Championships. All you have to do is beat the previous year's champion in order to claim it.

Probably :D... But lets be honest with ourselves, would this have been reported nationally if it wasn't following Ohio St. vs. sexat? Probably not. Just because your team wins a game doesn't make people any less retarded, and Ohio St. isn't above this.

My point is people are dumb no matter where you go, people act stupid and do stupid things. Just because your team wins big doesn't make you less likely to act a fool. Look at fOSU, the "state's university" has a big time player accused of some pretty serious stuff, and fOSU fans think he is fine to play on the team. See, they are stupid and they haven't won anything EVAR!!!!

This is why the Buckeyes and Mountaineers never play. No one remembers who won the last time they met, but scientists claim the post-game activities caused global warming, ozone layer holes, El Nino, the proliferation of internet pornography, and multiple Pinto explosions.

Actually they played in 1998 tOSU 31 WV 10.

BTW School hasn't started at tOSU so most of the students aren't even on campus yet. Its most likely these are locals and this isn't unheard of in larger metropolitan areas.

Because Columbus is such a large college town there is a surplus of couches that need to be burned to control the salvation army couch population. It's not unlike the Iowa Corn burning riots of 1987 or the Sooner rather than later covered wagon burning riots of 1972.

If you go 400 miles north of Columbus you're in Canada. If you're referring to Lancaster feel free to remove their 35k population. Columbus metro still has 500k more people.

BTW:

I'm not bashing on Norman (I like Oklahoma), my brother-in-law was stationed at Tinker in OKC so I've been there. It's actually a lot like Ohio in that the people, landscape and climate are similar. Ohio is just more populated with bigger cities, and I'm not even saying thats a good thing; more crime, more traffic and the point of my post more boneheads setting couches on fire. Its just a symptom that can be found in any of the larger cities.

Just to add to my post above:

The afforementioned brother-in-law went to OSU and his wife went to Oklahoma. Their consensus was that the fan bases were very similar in Norman and Columbus. They both agreed OK State was more of a hillbillie school.
