193 years ago, In the first unqualified defeat of a British naval squadron in history, U.S. Captain Oliver Hazard Perry leads a squadron of nine American ships to victory over a squadron of six British warships at the Battle of Lake Erie during the War of 1812.

The battle was closely contested for hours, and Perry's flagship USS Lawrence was reduced to a defenseless wreck. He then transferred his flag to Niagara and sailed right up the middle into the British line, firing broadsides and forcing the British to surrender.

The painting depicts the moment when Perry and a small contingent, in a daring move, rowed a half-mile through heavy gunfire from the wrecked Lawrence to her sister brig USS Niagara. Once he was a aboard, he took it to the limey fleet with a vengeance

This flag, one of the most historic in the annals of the United States Navy, was commissioned by Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry and flown aboard his flagship, USS Lawrence, during the Battle of Lake Erie on this day in 1813. The slogan "Don't give up the ship" came from the last words of the vessel's namesake, Captain James Lawrence, as he lay mortally wounded on the deck of USS Chesapeake three months earlier. In what was certainly the most famous shifting of flags ever carried out in U.S. naval history, Perry took this battle flag along with his commodore's broad pennant from the sinking Lawrence and hoisted them aboard USS Niagara before going on to kick some serious British tail on the lake including HMS Detroit, HMS Charlotte, and four smaller vessels mounting a total of 63 guns to Perry's 54. This flag is now in the possession of the United States Naval Academy. The image above was made from a photograph of the original.

Perry had won a complete victory at the cost of 27 Americans killed and 96 wounded; British casualties were 40 dead and 94 wounded. After the battle, Perry sent a famous dispatch to U.S. General William Henry Harrison(later president of "Tippecanoe an Tyler Too" fame) that read, "We have met the enemy, and they are ours."

The Battle of Lake Erie forced the British to abandon Detroit, ensuring U.S. control over Lake Erie and the territorial old northwest.

The replica US Brig Niagara is a museum ship and sail training vessel located in Erie, Pennsylvania at the Erie Maritime Museum. It is a replica of the original US Brig Niagara, which played a pivotal role in the Battle of Lake Erie and the victory of Commodore Oliver Harzard Perry during the War of 1812.

The Battle of Lake Erie made Perry an instant hero. For the remainder of the war Perry worked closely with General Harrison, participating in the recovery of Detroit and in the battle of the Thames. From 1814 to 1817 he commanded USS Java in the Mediterranean. Perry was sent on a diplomatic mission to Venezuela in 1819, and on the return voyage he died of yellow fever.

What Ollie Perry REALLY said:

"We have met the enemy and all their boats are belong to us."

No? Well, was you there, Chollie?

Great post, as always, Homey!
