View Full Version : Lesser Known Military-isms
These must change through the years. I remember some words and sayings that are common in the military, but not so much in the civilian world. Include the "era" of service for reference. This could be interesting.
Some from Rogue's Army ('90-'93)
"Ate Up" - Like SNAFU, only it can be used for people and equipment
"Jody" - Homewrecker (male)
"Beat Your Face" Do push ups, used by drill sergeant types
"Charlie Foxtrot" Cluster F**K
"Lifer" career military doods, a differ'nt breed for sure
"Pogey Bait" Junk Food in the field, good for bartering
"REMF" Rear echelon MF'er
Some new ones I've heard
"Haji" Someone of middle-eastern descent, usually an enemy or suspected enemy
"get some" - come on and fight, mf'er
"hillbilly armor" - homemade add-on armor

i was a "lifer"...got the blue ID card and everything
at Ft Rucker - in WOCS - "beat your face" was replaced with "get in the grass"....several years before, some WO candidates had their hands burned on the hot pavement/asphalt, and the resulting IG complaint is where "get in the grass" came from
my son, the 11B - would call any non-infantryman a POG (piece of garbage)
FUBAR was still in use
at work, when somebody is on vacation, i'm still in the habit of saying "they're on leave"
do they still use "broke d!ck?"

When some of the equipment at work is broken, one of the 20-year AF guys says it's "tango uniform". Took me awhile to realize he was saying it was "tittay's up".

Stay in your lane -- I'll do my job, you do yours
Stay outta my chili -- mind your own business
Flexibility is the key to airpower... and indecision is the key to flexibility
analysis paralysis -- when folks are so intent on planning the perfect operation or system, they end up fundamentally unable to act
related...The pursuit of "perfect" is the enemy of "good enough"
about face -- to reverse a course of action
give birth to a co-pilot -- take a dump
malfunctioning sh1t-fart valve -- guy afraid to pass gas b/c he soooooo has to take a dump
There is no peacetime reason to penetrate a thunderstorm -- gospel
useless as altitude above you and runway behind you-- a useless thing/person/organization
check six -- (short for check your six o'clock) -- watch out behind you
pedestrians -- ground forces
boat people -- navy
tracked targets -- tanks, IFV's, etc.
cumulo-granite -- mountains
CND FAI -- could not duplicate (a malfunction) fly as is
Jet fuel groupies -- airshow attending chickies and/or girls who go to o-clubs on airbases who dig flight suits
pencil-whip -- claim accomplishment of a required training event when in reality you just filled out the accomplishment form
bogeys -- unidentified aircraft
bandits -- aircraft identified as bad guys
Indian country-- enemy airspace
bail-out/eject/fire/smoke -- four words you NEVER use in a cockpit unless they are actually indicated by circumstances
pull back and the houses get smaller, push and the houses get bigger -- when explaining how the stick or control yoke works
everybody grab a throttle, we're going around!-- alluding to the eight throttles on the center console of a BUFF
400 mile-an-hour tape -- duct tape (so named b/c it will prolly stay on up to that speed)
target rich environment -- we're outnumbered badly
beak to beak -- head to head attack
swing his 3-9 line -- pass to the threat's rear aspect
getting beaked -- getting angry at a person, enemy or thing
put it on the beam -- get and stay directly abreast of a radar guided threat in order to hide in his radar's doppler notch
fangs out -- getting so mad you do things in an engagement you might not otherwise do. Soemtimes this is good, sometimes it can kill you.
energy conservation -- about physics, not fuel. You want to keep up your airspeed in an engagement. Avoid situations where you have an energy deficit relative to the threat aircraft
chase electrons -- what avionics tech people do
queertrons -- source of malfunction in a piece of avionics gear
recycle the power -- turn something off and turn it back on. Fixes a lot of stuff and is always the first thing maintenance people ask you if you did before you wrote up a malfunction for post-flight repair.
hadji -- arab local
BMT -- black moving thing (burka wearing arab woman)
Desert Sapper

Some new ones:
fobbit - The guy who never leaves the basecamp (Forward Operating Base) for fear of getting shot at (or of being a little uncomfortable and missing his ice cream from the mess hall).
The sand box/litter box - the USCENTCOM theater
Good Idea Fairy - That guy...you know the one
TOCroach - A relative of the fobbit.
Desert Queen - The girl who wouldn't get a second look outside of the litter box, but has to fight guys off in theater
Shower Princess - The person (m/f) that takes hour long showers when the FOB has a water restriction

He'd also say that if you said it to a big enough crowd, chances are, some closeted Marine who's still bitter about it would be compelled to respond. :texan:

These Euro "Private Snuffies" are obviously being exposed to some "sergeants time" learning some very important information on the importance of keeping their entrenching tool rust free...or perhaps a briefing from a personnel troop on the vital necessity of updating their emergency locator information...or something.
