Got this in my e-mail today. I'm old so someone please explain the felonious acts being perpetrated here.

TIA

Today, in just one single day, TU Information Services will process ten (10) claims of entertainment related copyright infringement reported to
us overnight.

This is near our record and a significant problem. The consequence,
according to University policy, is that alleged offenders are notified.
Material in violation of copyright law must be removed from their
computers. Any subsequent second notification will result in the
termination of networking services.

Four of the reports come to us from the Recording Industry Association
of America, Inc. Three are from Universal Studios. Three are from the
Entertainment Software Association.

The following policy on our Information Services website is now somewhat
dated and the tools have evolved; however, the nature of the problem
remains the same. Please read "What You Should Know About P2P File
Sharing" under policies at http://www.is.utulsa.edu/policies.

More specifically, the document is at:
http://www.is.utulsa.edu/artman/publish/article_69.shtml

Similarly, the University computer ethics policy clearly references
local, state, and federal statutes and other University policies.
Please re-read the ethics policy at
http://www.is.utulsa.edu/artman/publish/article_3.shtml

generally those are sent out when someone is sharing music on Kazaa/Limewire or BitTorrent

if it's movies, it's the MPAA, i've seen them come from Borland for C++ or something as well

so 10 people are sharing music and/or movies and/or computer games over the innerweb. And the university is flipping out because right now the RIAA and MPAA have dropped a lot of cash on a veritable army of ninja-lawyers to parachute in and sue the pants off of the not only the perpatrators of this activity, but anyone remotely connected to these activities, such as the ISP's (which is in this case, the university), the people who made the software that made it possible, the people who made the computers that made it possible to run the software that made it possible to steal, the people who made the speakers in said computers who made it possible to...you get the point.

Thus far, few people have stood up to the RIAAs strong arm tactics, simply because they are essentially trying to stiff these groups out of money that amounts to slightly less than what it would cost to hire a decent lawyer to defend your case....so most people just settle, or if they weren't involved, do their damndest to fingerpoint away from them.
