Did he mean it as some kind of weird compliment? Or was it intended as an insult?

Someone said something to me one time and I still don't know if it was a compliment or not...still bothers me.

He was mad, but he did not want to escalate the situation by dropping an MFer on me or anything. He was mad because I did what I was supposed to do after he did not do what he was supposed to do.
