No beer in Skelly after all, TU says
By ERIC BAILEY World Sports Writer

Calling it a "distraction," the school did an about-face on Tuesday and announced it will not sell alcohol inside Skelly Stadium this season.

The switch comes after Friday's controversial news that beer would be sold at football games for the first time in a decade.

"The same group that made the decision -- and we indicated (on Friday) that it was a very cautious decision -- said it was becoming a real distraction to what we have building here toward a terrific year," Tulsa athletic director Bubba Cunningham said on Tuesday. "We just thought it was in our best interests to change the decision."

The group was made up of "a lot of different constituents," Cunningham said.

University President Steadman Upham wasn't available for comment, but likely was part of the decision process.

Cunningham said it was an institutional decision and not left up to one person.

"We take our label, our brand, very seriously and try to make the best decision that we can," he said. Cunningham was asked how the school looked after switching decisions in such a short time.

"I think it's a great university and we're on the right path to do wonderful things," he answered. "That hasn't changed."

Will the school explore beer sales in the future?

"It's been a distraction, so the best thing to say is we're not selling it in the stadium and we'll continue the same practices that we have," the athletic director said.

TU is a "wet" campus and even allows alcohol sales in its student union. Student organizations, in the past, have sold beer to raise money outside Skelly Stadium on game days. A beer garden will be located outside the stadium gates, just like last season, to cater to fans.

Liz Gifford's son Greg was killed by a drunken driver on July 31, 1997. She's glad the school changed its stance. "I was a little puzzled at first because most universities are going in the opposite direction and removing alcohol from their facilities," Gifford said. "This is a great decision. I'm really glad that they came to their senses in this issue before there were any tragedies." Lady, wake up and smell the Budweiser. If you think anyone can divorce beer from college life and college football, you are crazier than T. Boone Pickens who thinks $100M wasted on the pokes will bring a national championship football team.
TU's decision to sell alcohol inside the stadium was made after months of research, which included a look at perception. "We considered an awful lot of factors, including public relations," Cunningham said.

Cunningham said he didn't receive much feedback -- positive or negative -- in the days following Friday's news. Beer was sold inside Skelly's gates during the 1995 and 1996 seasons before being banned.

I think you're giving the Baptists too much credit. There are usually three factors behind this kind of decision. 1. money 2. money 3. money

Somebody, be it Reynolds, Chapman, etc. didn't like the thought of beer.

Anybody know why they quit selling it after 95-96?

Dear Mother Of Dead Child,

I am deeply sorry for your loss. But if you think that not selling beer INSIDE Skelly is gonna make a damn bit of difference to someone who can get hammered RIGHT OUTSIDE THE GATE up until kickoff, duck out and drink some more at halftime, and then drink all the way back to the car...then you're a f*cking idiot.

Signed,
EVERYONE

Don't forget that one very rich Muslim from The Kingdom helps the school out financially as well.

That someone who is well connected with the Bin Laden Engineering and Construction company.

Well, some shiek did give a bunch of dinars to build the mosque on campus -- right next to the law skool. That joint has always kinda give me the willies.

Who else would, the Pope? :D

My point was that it's a stretch (IF what Tuba said is true) to jump from saying that a wealthy Muslim donates to TU to saying that TU is funded by bin Laden. My understanding of the bin Laden Companies in Saudi Arabia is that it's a pretty well-respected family and business. It just happens that one of old man bin Laden's numerous kids is the most wanted a-hole on the planet.

Don't people actually have to go to a Tulsa football game before this is an issue? :)

It cracks my shiz up that you can drink at Talons, Drillers, and Oilers games, but everyone got their bowels in an uproar over it happening at TU games. What's the dang difference?

Personally, I think QT was definitely behind this. They didn't want their lose their tallboy sales during half time.

very good point. Lots of folks walk over there and pound a few back in their parking lot during the game...that, and the bars who put beer trailers in their parking lots facing Skelly.

So, it's not just the Roman Catholics who have a behind the scenes influence at quality universities?
And make arbitrary decisions without biblical reference? Who'd a thunk it?

I never understood the argument of banning alcohol due to biblical considerations. Really, in my opinion, its a weak argument. I mean, the man himself turned water into wine people (or so they say, and no, I don't buy the grape juice bit some people try to come back with...that wouldn't be impressive enough to write about). He kept the party going so that the host wouldn't have to leave everyone there to make a beer run.

I'm not sure why everyone makes such a huge deal about buying alcolhol at football games to begin with. Athletic events are supposed to be family-friendly environments, and unfortunately there's a segment of the alcohol-buying public that seems to have a really hard time figuring out that getting ****-faced and acting like an assface doesn't really help the family-friendliness.

Seriously, can we as a society not go four hours without drinking a beer? Is it that much of an imposition?

I see what you're saying, but it can be applied to so many behavior patterns that will affect a game experience inside a stadium. Any time you get lots of people together like that, there are going to be isolated problems, booze or no.

For the most part, the people who go to college football games are the same people who go to professional sports games, where beer is sold. It would be nice to have that option. Particularly for TU, where any dollar going into the athletic department is a good one.

I don't believe for a minute that anywhere close to a majority of fans who come out for a TU game are doing so because it is their only option for booze-free athletic goodness, just like I don't believe that anywhere close the majority of folks who would buy a beer at the game would get hammered and act like an assface there.

I just hate to see options get quashed by a minority of people who fear a minority of people.

they prolly figured out that they would get more sales from wine & cheese with the typical TU fan...
