As of today, Aug. 29, there are 10 teams at least five games or within the extremely muddled National League wildcard race:

1. Reds
2. Padres (1/2 GB)
3. Phillies (1 GB)
4. Giants (1 1/2 GB)
5. Marlins (2 GB)
6. Diamondbacks (2 1/2 GB)
7. Astros (3 1/2 GB)
8. Brewers (4 1/2 GB)
9. Braves (4 1/2 GB)
10. Rockies (5 GB)

With just over a month left, this may turn out to be one of the wildest playoff races we've ever seen.
Discuss freely.
I'm partial to the Reds, but I still get the feeling that the Astros are going to have a say in this when it's all said and done.

The Padres are killing the D-backs, and they may leapfrog the Reds into first place.
Reds, meanwhile, are locked in a 5-5 struggle in the 7th at L.A. Houston, Philly, Florida and Atlanta have already won tonight.

Reds lose in 16 innings when Ryan Franklin comes into the game and gives up a walkoff homer on his very first pitch.
So, that means we have a new wildcard leader:

Padres 67-65 -
Reds 67-66 1/2 GB
Phillies 66-65 - 1/2 GB
Marlins 65-66 - 1 1/2 GB
Giants 65-67 - 2 GB
Astros 64-68 - 3 GB
Diamondbacks 64-68 - 3 GB
Braves 62-68 - 4 GB
Brewers - 62-70 - 5 GB
Rockies 61-70 - 5 1/2 GB

The Astros are on a five game win streak, I think it is, against the NL powerhouses Milwaukee Brewers and Pittsburgh Pirates. The cheerleaders in Houston in the print and electronic media are getting all excited. But watch out this weekend: the Mets come to town and don't face the Astros' best pitcher, Oswalt until maybe Sunday.

I have strong feeling that the 'Stros and their kool-aid swilling fans are gonna have a rude awakening this weekend. JMO
