View Full Version : Earrings for guys - acceptable or not?

Something tasteful like a gold ring, diamond stud or a silver cross / dagger.

No, not metal face look with pierced eyebrow, nose or tongue.

Does anyone have a problem with men wearing earrings to work?

Men have been accessorizing for at least as long as there is recorded history. And, more than a few football players sport earrings.

So, is that like acceptable or not?

Not around my household when I was growing up. Dad set me straight. He told me if I came home with one he'd rip it out & hand it to me. To this day I remain pierceless.

I don't think there's anything wrong with dudes piercing their ears but I don't feel the need for myself.

It's ghey and classless unless you're a pirate (not named Mike Leach).

Heh!

Sic'em, I'd thought you'd be a little nicer to a Baylor alum. But, then I'm really a gay-loving Republican pirate. Urrrrgh!

Me dad said the exact same thing, Sooner Born 68. Weird that he was so opposed to ear piercings but accepted the tattoos. I haven't figured that one out yet.

So, I bought this silver dagger in Vietnam a couple months ago. It's not like I'm totally immoral or out to steal all the wimmin or something.

Weren't you a biz major? I bet you'd be a bit hit at Hankamer with a dagger ear ring. ;)

Naw, they only care about their rankings and the income of their grads. I didn't have a course on appropriate face jewelery.;)

I always thought they were OK... for Pirates and gay hardressers. Still do, as a matter of fact. But I'm old fashioned and Tragially Unhip.

I don't have a problem with one tasteful piercing of the ear for a stud on a guy. Actually, I'm okay with whatever one wants to do with themselves, as long as it doesn't have anything to do with me. It certainly isn't any of my business what one chooses to do with ones own body.

For example: I have no problem with anyone piercing their eyebrows, noses or whatever other body parts they want to pierce, but I would never hire someone with a bunch of man made body holes to work for me.

I had one for a while in the 80s.

But it was the 80s and it seemed most everyone my age had one then.

I don't see many around these days, but I don't leave town much. I don't fiind them offensive or unacceptable... just not for me at this point in my life. If interviewing several candidates and one had an earring, it wouldn't affect my hiring decision in the least.

Well, then again, er...

No. Piercings are not a protected class unless it can be shown that they are a necessary part of your religion. Even then, the employer can require as part of their dress code that piercings be removed before coming to work.

If you're a guy, don't come to an interview with any facial piercings in. If you're a girl, don't come with anything but conservative earrings. While I was at the Credit Union, any guy who came in wearing earrings got a huge downgrade simply because it showed no damn common sense.

I had my left ear pierced when I was in high school-twice. Haven't put anything in the piercings since I was 18 or 19. It was cool (at least up here) back then.

I’m thinking that having an earring is still way, way cool.

I saw some guys on campus yesterday with them, I personally just don't get it, but if they like it then it's a free country and they ought to be able to express themselves without derision. I am not a jewelry kind of guy, I only wear a watch at work so I'll know what time it is, and when i have been married I wear a ring.

Just like many things concerning style, Black guys can pull it off. White guys, not so much.

I was going to say something of the sort, but couldn't figure out a way to put it that didn't come across as somewhat racist.

There are distinct subcultures in America. The African-American subculture is one such. In the African-American subculture, flashier clothes and jewelry is more acceptable than it is in the dominant culture.

However, someone wishing to obtain employment in the dominant culture-especially in a job where people expect conservatism and fiduciary responsibility-should make efforts to adhere to the dominant culture's fashions while at work.

Example: A box-and-fade was pretty cool for African-Americans in the early 90s. White dudes just looked dumb with one.

So we should all buy sombreros?:D

Btw, I still think what I said had no racial connotation whatsoever. But what do I know, I'm just a crazy redneck cracka from down south.
