Maybe what we need to do in the Middle East is get the Turks to put the Ottoman Empire back together. I think that idea has potential. Also, Franch has a terrible record of getting involved overseas. These are the people that thought it would be a great idea to camp out at Dien Bien Phu.

You know, I've always wondered if guys in the modern French army realize they're the redicule and butt of military jokes everywhere..especially in the US.

They obviously have no clue if they are rolling around in public with the surrender flag.

Too bad we can't simply clone Ataturk and put him/them in charge of every ME country. The kurds might not like that though, and they are pretty much our stauchest allies in that part of the world.

how the parties have changed - this is lbj's (lady bird always loved calling him that, without the "l" of course) rejoinder to degaulle back in the day

Eleven cemeteries are in France. In 1964 French President Charles de Gaulle withdrew France from NATO's military structure. He ordered all American military personnel out of France. American President Lyndon Johnson directed Secretary of State Dean Rusk to visit de Gaulle personally and ask de Gaulle a single question.

"You tell de Gaulle that this question is from the mouth of the President of the United States of America," he told Rusk. Rusk balked when Johnson told him the question, saying, "I cannot say that to the president of France." Johnson replied, "You tell him exactly what I said."

In Paris de Gaulle, standing behind his desk, restated his order to Rusk for American troops to be withdrawn. Rusk told him, "I am directed by President Johnson to ask you this question. It is from the mouth of the President of the United States: 'Does your order include the bodies of American soldiers in France's cemeteries?'"

Rusk later related that the question hit de Gaulle so hard that he collapsed into his chair and did not respond for a full minute. I don't recall what he said to Rusk.

Gawd I hate the UN.

Hate em.

A tick on a dog's a*s has more use on this planet.

I hope they pass their stupid treaty to ban all civilian ownership of guns someday, and I hope they send teh French to enforce it.

Yes. Yes they do. They definitely hang a lot of their self-worth on Napolean and pretty much ignore the 20th century.

They didn't embarrass themselves too much in WWI. Standing toe to toe with the Germans at Verdun was pretty impressive.

During the period of the Ancien Régime (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ancien_R%C3%A9gime), in the 18th century (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/18th_century), the royal standard (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Royal_standard&action=edit) of France (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/France) became a plain white flag. The white color was also used as a symbol of military command, by the commanding officer of a French army.
After the French Revolution (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/French_Revolution), in 1794, the Tricolor (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flag_of_France) was adopted as the official flag of France, sometimes covered in fleur-de-lis (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fleur-de-lis). The white flag quickly became a symbol of French royalists. During the Bourbon Restoration (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bourbon_Restoration) period in France, it replaced the Tricolor, seen as a symbol of regicide (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Regicide). The French troops fighting in the American War of Independence (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_War_of_Independence) fought under the white flag. It was finally abandoned in 1830, with the July Revolution (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/July_Revolution).
In 1873, an attempt to reestablish the monarchy failed because of the refusal of Henri d'Artois (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Henri_d%27Artois), who was to become king, to accept the Tricolor. He demanded the return of the white flag.
