View Full Version : State quarter design finalists

I personally think they all pretty much suck but what do I know. I do want to know if all the "artists" were from the Ponca area with the pioneer woman being in many of the designs. Also those in the Eastern part of the state may wonder a bit if they were forgotten with all the focus on oil and wheat farming.;)
IMO, they really should have focused much more on the Native American heritage that is Oklahoma. Like maybe a picture of a casino?(kidding on the last part of course):D

Those suck! Why don’t they just quote Will Rogers? That dude always had something funny to say.

Diplomacy is the art of saying 'Nice doggie' until you can find a rock.

Even if you're on the right track, you'll get run over if you just sit there.

You know everybody is ignorant, only on different subjects.

I'm not a real movie star. I've still got the same wife I started out with twenty-eight years ago.

Politics is applesauce.

There's no trick to being a humorist when you have the whole government working for you.

I don't make jokes. I just watch the government and report the facts.

We can't all be heroes because somebody has to sit on the curb and clap as they go by.

An ignorant person is one who doesn't know what you have just found out.

Everything is funny as long as it is happening to Somebody Else.

You can't say that civilization don't advance, however, for in every war they kill you in a new way.

Half our life is spent trying to find something to do with the time we have rushed through life trying to save.

Nothing you can't spell will ever work.

The income tax has made more liars out of the American people than golf has.

See what will happen if you don't stop biting your fingernails?

Ancient Rome declined because it had a Senate; now what's going to happen to us with both a Senate and a House?

Our constitution protects aliens, drunks and U.S. Senators.

The more you read and observe about this Politics thing, you got to admit that each party is worse than the other. The one that's out always looks the best.

The movies are the only business where you can go out front and applaud yourself.

An onion can make people cry, but there has never been a vegetable invented to make them laugh.

Live in such a way that you would not be ashamed to sell your parrot to the town gossip.

There ought to be one day-- just one-- when there is open season on senators.

Take the diplomacy out of war and the thing would fall flat in a week.

I belong to no organized party. I am a Democrat.

Heroing is one of the shortest-lived professions there is.

I was not a child prodigy, because a child prodigy is a child who knows as much when it is a child as it does when it grows up.

We don't know what we want, but we are ready to bite somebody to get it.

The only time people dislike gossip is when you gossip about them.

The best doctor in the world is the veterinarian. He can't ask his patients what is the matter-he's got to just know.

We are all here for a spell; get all the good laughs you can.

Don't gamble; take all your savings and buy some good stock and hold it till it goes up, then sell it. If it don't go up, don't buy it.

Rumor travels faster, but it don't stay put as long as truth.

There is only one thing that can kill the Movies, and that is education.

Well, all I know is what I read in the papers.

I bet you if I had met him [Trotsky] and had a chat with him, I would have found him a very interesting and human fellow, for I never yet met a man that I didn't like.

Communism is like prohibition, it's a good idea but it won't work.

Be thankful we're not getting all the government we're paying for.

I never expected to see the day when girls would get sunburned in the places they do today.

The man with the best job in the country is the Vice President. All he has to do is get up every morning and say, "How's the President?"

I like the scissortail and wildflower dealio best. Second choice is the map of the state surrounded by 46 stars which is stylized version of our state seal.

Random observations:

1) The "Pioneer woman" statue is pretty prominent in many of the rest of them. I have no idea why that imagery is being advanced as a state symbol. Sure, its a cool statue and all...but WTF?

2) One of the designs features a white male farmer shaking hands with an Indian woman wearing tribal dress. I bet that hardly never happened.;) That said, the design is such bald-faced attempt at uber-PC-ism its nauseating.

3) The prominence of smoking pipes in many of the designs would be perceived by many pundits as a tribute to the rise of tribal smoke shops in Oklahoma.

4) Gushing oil derricks? No thanks.

5) The prominence of an Indian woman with a baby in a cradleboard on her back is too much like the Sacejawea [sp?] dollar. I have no problem with invoking imagery of the Indian Removal Acts and/or "Trail of Tears" but there are prolly more evocative images for that.

I'd guess it's because it's one of the more recognized symbols in the state.....I didn't see anyone here asking "Who's the chick with the kid". For someone as versed in history as yourself Homey, I'm a little surprised at your reaction to it. The Pioneer Woman was created "in appreciation of the heroic character of the women who braved the dangers and endured the hardships incident to the daily life of the pioneer and homesteader in this country." It was also dedicated on the anniversary of the 1893 opening of the Cherokee Outlet. sort of a big day in Oklahomas history.

Of course, if they wanted to get to the heart of Oklahoma, they'd have a guy noodling for catfish on the back of that quarter. ;)

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Hang on to any of the new State of Oklahoma quarters.

Here's my non-Okie wife's take. "It needs to feature the Land Run. That's what people around the country think of when they think of Oklahoma." Why avoid it? Its something to be celebrated because its what helps makes us uniquely Okies.
