Ray Nagin takes a swipe at ground zero...

During the "60 minutes" interview, a correspondent pointed out flood-damaged cars still on the streets of New Orleans' devastated Ninth Ward. Nagin replied, "You guys in New York can't get a hole in the ground fixed, and it's five years later. So let's be fair,"

It was a classic case of the "lesser of two evils" problem. The other guy was a bigger tool. Kinda like Nixon vs. McGovern in 1973.

Look, there is a pretty well-founded saying that "any publicity is good publicity." If the statement brings in cash, he's doing his job -- although I wouldn't have said it.

I am floored by this comment. While technically factual, it is highly insensitive. How can you demand that people have empathy for the situation in New Orleans by taking a swipe at their own tragedy. Nagin is just making excuses & pointing fingers to try & take the focus off of his own lack of leadership.

Besides, the two cannot even be compared. 9/11 killed more people, but it only affected one city block and one wing of the Pentagon. Katrina essentially wiped an entire city off the map. The recovery efforts cannot be compared to each other when you look at them side by side.

The biggest difference is that people care about 9/11. People were affected by 9/11 regardless of where they live. Many of those same people look at New Orleans, and even though the devastation was on a much greater scale, they usually comment with "Man, that sucks for them, but that's what they get for living below sea level." Because of that, you cannot win a battle when you try to compare the two incidents...so it is better to leave them to stand on their own.

And Okla-homey is spot on correct. The last mayor's election was a SNAFU of monumental proportions & by the time it got to the runoff, it was time to pick the lesser of two evils.

What do you expect out of NOLAs? After jacking up Houston's crime rate, living off the "gubment" for almost a year now, and not going back enmass and cleaning up and rebuilding, like MS and AL, do you expect that they would vote any other way than the tired old same way?

Count me as tired of hearing and reading of the hand wringing about Katrina (re: NOLAs) and of hearing about the lack of help from anyone connected from gubment in LA, I don't hear MS or AL crying... or TX (from Rita).

One of the Republican candidates for mayor of New Orleans ran on the slogan of "Keep the welfare pimps out." When asked what she meant, she basically said that the city does not need a bunch of lazy people with thier hands out to come back. the city needs people willing to come home & bust their asses to rebuild.

Unfortunately, the only people who lived in Orleans Parish who could vote in the election were.......welfare pimps!

The people you are referring to don't necessarily care whose teet they are sucking off of, so long as the free milk & government cheese is flowing. Why would they want to leave Houston, Atlanta, or any other city when they are living high on the hog there (and probably better than they were in the Big Easy)?

As for comparing Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama, you only have to look as far as the Governor's mansion. Proper leadership can bring you back from any tragedy. Inept leadership can make the situation even worse. In fact, the Louisiana state treasurer has come out & said that Gov. Blanco has been withholding funds for as long as possible so that she can be seen as a great & generous person closer to her re-election. After the hurricane, her approval rating was in the 20s. Now it is in the 40s. What do you think it will do when she suddenly says "I have finally gotten you all the Millions you deserve!" only three months prior to the election??

Okay, I travel for a living and have spent weeks in a hotel. I cannot think of anything more depressing and boring... That's basically true as far as the runoff goes. I think there was a choice in the primary but the sheeple chose to vote for politics as usual.

As far as Willie Nagin goes, if it weren't for him getting in the paper for stupid statements like this, the people here wouldn't even know he exists. He's hardly been seen around here since the election. If the media would quit covering him, he would have the same relevance nationally that he has here.

When I was evacuating that Sunday before the storm, I remember seeing this truck parked along the side of the road with about 10 people in the back and this kid running out in the middle of the interstate to retrieve his shoe that he dropped out of the back of the truck. And traffic was going about 50 mph. I just thought to myself 'The good people of Dallas and Houston have no idea what's coming their way.'

True, hip hop isn't that old, rather it seems to contribute today I think. Could be wrong though.

I think poverty is a problem no matter who or where it is. It just seems the problem got noticeably worse during that time after, and it keeps the cycle of poverty going into today.

The stat of 70% of black kids growing up in single family homes is just amazing. The family seems to have just collapsed. That cannot be ignored.

because it's the same government that pays farmers to grow TOO much crops.
That's what the current farm bill is doing. There haven't been any PIK's since the mid 1980's. LDP's and target payments encourage overproduction. The only land that has been taken out of production is highly marginal land for the most part. Also, there aren't a whole hell of a lot of foreclosures right now, it's more that the land prices are too inflated for the small farmer to expand or get started. That is a direct result of the subsidies that are supposed to help the small farmer because they are linked to production, ergo the big producers have more cash to spend, and the long time family farms have a ton more equity that they can parlay into more land. The gov't would do less of this **** if it wasn't for the senators from the South being overprotectionist with the white commodities which hurt our trade agreements and the EU doesn't help with their idioic CAP.
