UPDATED: Body Found in Northwest Lubbock County

A search party found a woman's body in a field off of FM 179.

UPDATED 7:52 PM 08.20.06

During the search for two missing Lubbock women Sunday the body of a woman was found southwest of Shallowater. Authorities cannot yet confirm whether it is the body of either Peggy Merimon or Louetta Harrelson.

About 140 people spent much of Sunday searching for the two women who went missing Aug. 9 from the Lubbock State School, where they both work.

The search began at the State School in north-central Lubbock, but spread across much of northern Lubbock and much of Lubbock County. One of the search groups, led by Michael Bowles, Merimon’s brother-in-law, found the body just after 11 a.m. Sunday.

Speculating whether the body found is either Merimon or Harrelson, Bowles said “it could be, maybe it is, maybe it isn’t.” He said they hope it isn’t the body of either of the women; he said if it is, this would bring closure to the case.

The Lubbock County Medical Examiner’s Office should be able to make a determination Monday or early this week. Authorities Sunday could only confirm the body was of a woman that had probably been dead for eight to 10 days. The body had been decapitated.

Lubbock County Sheriffs Captain Don Carter said he could not speculate on the decapitation because there is a lot of animal activity in the area.

Bowles said a man on an all-terrain vehicle found the body, decapitated, in an open field near F.M. 179 and County Road 6000, southwest of Shallowater in northwest Lubbock County. The man was part of the group that used ATV’s, vehicles, horses and dogs during the comprehensive search of the area. Bowles said the group also found a bloody scalpel nearby and a bag of bones in another area. However, Capt. Carter said a DPS Lab Investigation found neither the scalpel nor bag of bones were connected to the decapitated body found.

Captain Carter said Sunday’s developments are “very new to us.” He says the Sheriff’s Office has been following leads since the day the women were reported missing. The Lubbock Police Department has led much of the case because the women went missing inside the city. The Texas Rangers are also assisting in the case.

An Aerocare helicopter was used Sunday afternoon while authorities on the ground secured the area and investigated. A Texas Ranger and a police investigator were on board the helicopter. The DPS helicopter that was used Monday to search the area was in use downstate, according to Carter.

Bowles said there were other discoveries Sunday, including a possible shallow, fresh grave elsewhere in the county. Capt. Carter says investigators did not find the reported grave.

The Sheriffs Office will be busy this week. Monday the Office will detail their plans for the search for missing Lubbock teen Joanna Rogers at the Lubbock Landfill. A state grant approved two weeks ago should cover all costs incurred by the Sheriffs Office during the search. County Commissioners last Monday approved the emergency addition to the Sheriff’s budget, which cleared the way for the search to begin at the landfill.

How has this story not made it to the national news? Oh yeah, some freak claims he killed a girl 10 years ago so we don't get to hear about anything else.

This is so sad, don't even know what to say.
