View Full Version : 5th Wheel and Travel Trailer ****** *******s

I'll be needing to purchase one in the near future for the new job. I'm thinking of getting roughly a 30' 5th wheel with one slideout.

Other than cheaper is there an advantage to a bumper pull travel trailer?

I lived in a 5th wheel for 3 years during college. No slide out.

Anyone have any advice on this issue?

TIA

What are you pulling it with?

Fifth Wheel advantages:
Pulls easier with less sway
Usually roomier (not always)
Easier to hook up.
Sometimes more storage
Can pull a small trailer behind it (although it's not recommended)

Fifth Wheel disadvantages:
Hitch is more expensive
tends to be bigger and heavier, requiring a heavier duty truck to pull it
Harder to back, until you get used to it, then it's just as easy
Must make wider turns and takes some getting used to.

Bumper Pull advantages:
Can pull with SUV
Hitch is cheaper
Usually cheaper, but not always

Bumper Pull disadvantages:
Tends to get more sway.
You need to buy an anti sway hitch and equalizer hitch if it's a big trailer
Takes longer to hook up if you have the above hitches
More tongue weight feel

That's about all I can think of. You're really good to go with either, depending on how far you pull it and what you're using to pull.

I'm gonna be using a 3/4 ton pick em up.

Do you sell 5th wheel hitches?

Where would I buy one and have it installed? The dealership if I get a new truck?

You should be ok with a 30 ft then.

Yep.

LWM, the truck stops here.

The dealership if I get a new truck?
Only if you want to...umm...how can I put this nicely...pay too much.

what kind of coin does it take to get a hitch bought and installed? ballpark figure.

*edit* and are they an in stock item? How long from when I say 'I want that one' until it gets installed and I drive away?

Depending on the truck and how heavy duty of a hitch it would run in the 5-600 and up range.

You should pull it with one of these. It is a good Oklahoma product and all OEM from Freightliner. www.sportchassis.com

If you can't buy it at LWM, i'm out.

:lwm:, do you carry above item? ;)

As much as I'm all for having more truck than you need, I'm thinking that's a wee bit more truck than he needs. :D

I'm thinking resale value should weigh heavily in your decision. ;)
