No team has yet played a game, and yet all suspects are already ranked in polls based on the opinions of the rankers and not anything that’s happened on the field. We also already know who is going to win the mythical national championship and the Heisman Trophy. According to the pundits, it’s Notre Dame in the first instance and the Fighting Irish quarterback, who in an odd quirk is actually of Irish descent, Brady Quinn, in the second.

The national champion-designate tag is a moot point, set out for discussion purposes only. All it means is that if the Irish win all their games, they should go to the BCS championship game, and if they don’t, whoever else is undefeated will take their place. But the Heisman-in-waiting tag that’s been stapled to the back of Quinn’s jersey actually means something. In effect, he’s already been given the trophy, and if he plays as he did last year, it will be his to keep come December.

If AD runs for 2000 with this OL, he'll get the Heisman - unless the team performs poorly and we have a not-too-great record - or unless we have more personnel problems - or I'm wrong.

You're welcome.

boosting his stats against army, navy, and air force.... WHAT THE HELL?????

and they blasted auburn for playing the citadel. what a joke. i'm all for the academies playing football and such, but against their own level of competition (1AA).

i never wish ill-will on someone unless it's notre dame.. i hope he throws 4 INT a game. they play georgia tech first???? GO TECH!!!!! BLITZ LIKE THE GERMANS AT PEARL HARBOR!!!!!!

It belongs to AD if he stays healthy and OU goes undeafted or possibly w/only one loss.

If OU has a great season and AD stay healthy, He'll get it.. Depends on the teams record. If we win the big12 without BoneHead it only makes AD look that much stronger!!

When December rolls around and AD is averaging 200 ypg, it's going to be close. The ND spin doctors will be in full effect, given that ND hasn't lost more than one by then.

Why don't we look back to 1979 when a great OU back should have won the Heisman, and a guess who from guess where won it wrongfully. I don't like the competition, AD is such a pure talent, and I would say that no matter where he chose to play at... but a Golden Dome is like a Heisman ticket. Especially if you have all the ND passing records BQ has.

Dude, Charles White beat out Billy that year. He was from suc, not ND. Now in 1956, when Paul Hornung beat out Tommy McDonald and Jerry Tubbs, despite playing on a team that went only 2-8, that was BS. And that was the definition of the ND spin machine. Expect it to be in full effect with BQ this year.

There are 3-4 players who have a legitimate shot at the Hypesman. That said, the media will do all in its considerable power to give the thing to Quinn. The media has decided that now is the time for domer to return to its former glory and hell freezing over will be the only thing that stops it, not withstanding 6 or 8 losses.

Don't worry about ND. The media elite will have it rules unconstitutional by the end of the season and all the players will be shipped to the University of Indiana, Bloomington. :D

Paul Hornung would disagree.I heard that .ND was 2-8 lost to OU 40-0 and Hornung STILL got The Trophy over McDonald,Tubbs.

There's one fanbase that thinks their second string RB has a good shot...

I'll take the field too. The Notre Dame schedule is a beast.

Actually, Johnny Majors finished second to Hornung. McDonald and Tubbs were 3rd & 4th.

how did pat sullivan win it in 71 ???

pruitt with 9.4 ypc.

how famous was Barry before he won it ???

His brother, LEE MAJORS, was 6 million dollar man. Johnny Majors went on to coach Pitt and win a N.C. with Tony Dorsett. Never knew he was second in the heisman though. Good info, HB.

With a major network carrying ND games, they will be promoting Quinn like crazy for the ratings. It will be tough this year for anyone else to win it, unless someone is viewed as FAR superior, which our "second string" TB will not be. AD has a chance, but will have to put up some huge numbers to overcome the media blitz directed at Quinn, IMOO. :(

Actually, Johnny Majors finished second to Hornung. McDonald and Tubbs were 3rd & 4th.My point was that they were both more deserving than Hornung off a 2-8 ND team.Splitting votes among 2 OU players did not help either which is why IMHO Majors was second.

Here are Hornung's stats from the 1956 Heisman season:

59-111 917 yards 3 TDs 13 INTs

94 rushes 420 yards 4.5 ypc

Who wasn't more deserving than him that year?

Although someone other than Quinn can win but it is definitely his to lose starting the season.

Not only will AD have to have a great season to win, Quinn will have to have a subpar season.

The media has spoken. They've already annoited Quinn as the Heisman winner.

I sure hope AD has that kind of season (one of a kind, being the key). I'll take 2,628 rushing yards , 3,250 total yards , 39 touchdowns and 234 points. I'll even take 10-2. I will NOT settle for the dad-gum Holiday Bowl again, nice as San Diego might be. Of course, if AD rushes for anywhere close to 2,600 yards, we won't probably be in San Diego again.

It will also be difficult if he loses at SC over Thanksgiving weekend, late in the season.

I'll give you that. As challenged as SC might be finding a QB this year, they have a wonderful OL that gives them an advantage breaking somebody in, outstanding talent at the skill positions, and a defense that (despite losses to the NFL) could be as outstanding as it was in 2004. ND, regardless of Big O will need some of their 'Luck o' the Irish' crap to leave LA untarnished.

ND schedule is too tuff for them to go undefeated. no NC for them.
